Just saw this on the front page of the Wall Street Journal. ouch Here's a link to CNN, hope our friends in Iberia are all okay. http://www.cnn.com/2017/06/18/europe/portugal-fire/index.html "The head of Portugal's judiciary police told reporters the fire was started by lightning. "We have been able to determine that the origin of the fire was caused by dry thunderstorms," José Maria Almeida Rodrigues said, according to the Portuguese state-run news agency Lusa." "The blaze spread Saturday to the Pedrógão Grande commu…

A blessing, and a curse.. that time of year again
by Silas_Sancona- 4 replies
As mentioned in passing by other local members, the forth coming week ahead looks brutal here in the desert.. Really, this time of year in the Sonoran Desert, and entire Southwest is both something we do and perhaps don't look forward to. June here is typically the hottest and driest month, on average. While daily highs in the lower 100s, and very low humidity/ dew point readings are typical, the exceptional heat building atm is not. As suggested, Phoenix may indeed reach.. if not surpass 120f by Tuesday and/ or Wednesday. The hottest recorded temp via the official weather station at Sky Harbor is 122f recorded on June 20th, 1990. These days, with all the neighborhoo…

Here it is, middle of the afternoon and I'm seeing lots of low to mid 30's on the Wundermap in Texas and Louisiana. Forecast doesn't look to pretty either. Good luck everyone! This is where you pat yourself on the back and rest easy tonight if your not a zone pusher. Curse the blue norther.

We hit 87F today. Scorching hot. Thank God. The coconuts are happy. This past week it's been nothing but cloudy and cool upper 60's weather. This is the big break the nucifera's needed.

San Diego area microclimates
by displaced_floridian- 1 reply
- 1.5k views
When looking up climate statistics, San Diego appears to have about the best climate for human comfort in the continental US. Jan. (coolest month) avg. 65/49, and Aug.(warmest month) 76/67. This seems almost ideal. But, these temps are only in a very small area of extreme coastal SD. Go inland just a few miles and you have a very different climate, with much higher highs and lower lows. Go North 20 miles and you also have lower lows and higher highs. Valleys and ridgetops also have a big impact. San Diego hasn't had a freeze since 1950, I think, but El Cajon, only about 15 mi. inland, freezes about every < 10 yrs with a January avg of 68/42 and August avg of 88/64. Som…

May Rain = pain in So-Cal?
by DoomsDave- 12 replies

As you might know out here, we had a bit of rain just this weekend. Hooray! Well, no. (Roof is being fixed.) This is not a rare occurrence, but it seems like it. I had about half an inch, enough to put off watering the Container Ranch of Doom for a couple of days. How about the rest of you?

Where is Central Florida ?
by Bill H2DB- 32 replies

While it is a indefinite area , I wonder where it perceived to be by those not living in the general area . Economic ties are one thing , but climate-wise etc are another . When I was young , the Daytona area was much more tied to Jacksonvile in many ways economically than now , as the growth of the I-4 corridor has changed everything . I prefer to refer to sub-divisions such as N. Central , S. Central , and even W. Central etc . It does seem that from afar , Florida ( as are many other places ), is seen as one amorphous place . Here is the Wikipedia article . Needs some input . Conspicuously absent is Highlands County , for e…

The Big Dry
by gsytch- 35 replies

It has been a long, long dry spell here in West Florida. Once Hurricane Matthew left the state - and left me without a drop - there has been precious little rainfall. It rained once in March, a good rain, but since then it has been low humidity and wind. February did see some rainfall, but January was exceedingly dry. The forecast does not look good with lower 80's and sunshine for the next week. I am sure more wildfires will break out with this wind. We desperately need an early season Tropical Low! My hose is getting very tired. We need our dancing prayers going because April is our driest month, and we are already in a drought. I am beginning to water my mature palms …

by Palm crazy- 8 replies

Well I had two freezes here in March one at 32F and over the weekend on March 19th had 29F. Was really hoping for warmer temps this month. Oh well last frost day is March 31 but I see nothing below 40F for the rest of the month. Planted out lots of things this weekend, Cannas, Elephant ears upright and regular, Dahlia ‘manhattan island’ you get the picture, LOL! It’s finally Spring!

Just looked at the forecast synoptics for this week and on Thursday the north island of NZ looks like it will cop a very strong low that will just walk down the east coast of NZ and then as the system breaks up the rain will walk north from the south right up the west coast, but of course with less wind strength. It looks like a cyclone but that far south it likely will be a cold core storm system. Take care PT members in NZ over the next few days.

Record Cold Snap, Darwin, Australia
by greysrigging- 4 replies

Darwin, at 12*S latitude, enjoys ( suffers ) an extremely hot and humid Monsoonal climate. We also attract our fair share of tropical disturbances called Cyclones in the Southern Hemisphere. In fact we are under a Cyclone Watch at the moment and this particular system has produced some abnormal weather conditions in the Top End last night and today. As expected, a lot of rain has fallen along the northern coast, over 225mm ( 9" ) in 24 hours. The rain is not so unusual ( although it is very late in the season for a Cyclone to develop, its not unheard of..... ) What is unusual is the extremely cold ( for our latitude ) temperatures associated with this Tropical Low. Its t…

US Winter Results
by bubba- 33 replies

Winter is over for the majority of Palm growing regions of the United States. The maximum and minimum temperatures together with the growing days reveal with great precision the climate of each region. Every year is different but this year the Western US was cool. South Texas and South and Central Florida were extremely warm. Subtropical regions such as Houston, New Orleans and Jacksonville were also comparatively warm although Houston and New Orleans did experience temperatures in the low 20s F. Los Angeles experienced a winter high temperature in December 2016 of 80° F, a low of 40F in January 2017 and growing days totaling 629 units for the three months. Pa…

A Weather Underground location on Kenlyn Rd. at the North-end of PB reveals the expected large micro-climate between PB near the super warm year round Gulfstream and the reported temperatures at the West Palm Beach airport (PBIA). There is no question that this was a ridiculously warm winter in South Florida but this micro-climate cuts both ways. Between Dec.1-31 2016, the high temperature at PBIA was 87F on Dec.6, 2016. The high on the same day on the site in PB was 82.4F. The low at PBIA for the month was 49F on Dec. 31,2016 while PB recorded 59F on the same date. Between Jan.1-31 2017, the high at PBIA was 86F on Jan.3, 2017 and the high the same day was only…

Looking more like winter, as we know it, may be over. Nothing serious coming our way. The squalls that came off the Gulf last night gave me almost an inch of rain! What a nice surprise. That is more rain than I had in Dec and Jan combined.

Floods in Northern California

Everyone: I'm getting a little nostalgic for the drought. First the D. sainluciei, now this: http://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/downstream-communities-brace-for-flooding-as-dams-overflow/ar-AAn9LNz?li=BBnb7Kz&ocid=spartanntp Praying for all of our Palm Talkers up north, hope the water stays put., away from you. This type of thing is far from unprecedented, however. The picture below is from the Great California Flood of 1861 - 62. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Flood_of_1862 And, dread the ARkStorm . . . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARkStorm
