Help with ailing King Palm tree
by VasiliP- 7 replies
Hello everyone! I would love your insight/guidance here. We bought a king palm and planted in our yard about 2 months ago here in San Francisco, California. Since then we’ve been noticing a steady decline with the tree. We’ve been careful not to over water as it has been raining a lot. The tree does get about 4/5 hours a day if direct sunlight. We’re noticing that the leaves are turning brown(crispy) and most leaves have these brown spots. Any information would be greatly appreciated

Mr. Petty comes to Leucadia
by Billy- 2 replies

Darold Petty was kind enough to come visit me yesterday at our home in Leucadia. We enjoyed the sunshine and sipped on some cold IPA from a San Diego microbrewery while wandering around the yard looking at palms and talking story. It was a great visit and a pleasure meeting him. Perhaps the most exciting part for me was unpacking the Dypsis baronii “black stem” that Darold brought down for me. He did an amazing job of packaging the palm too. Absolutely pro. After touring the yard Darold headed out and I immediately went to a nearby nursery to grab a bag of soil so I could upsize the palm. Here’s a few photos.

Opinions on Butia
by Gville Palms- 12 replies

First of all, I know there have been many different threads on identifying Butia varieties and I have gone through many of them (all that I can find) but they have not really brought me any closer to an answer regarding a question I have about a Butia that I own. I bought this three years ago as a three gallon from either a Home Depot or a Lowe’s as just a cheapo plant for my side yard - it was maybe 25 bucks but looked nice. It was of course labeled as a pindo palm (Butia Capitata). Anyways, it grows and looks nothing like the other butias that I have. Within a matter of a couple years it has easily tripled in size, the trunk seems to be much more narrow than m…

Edit: for some reason, all my photos (other than Grafton hahaha) are uploading as black boxes via my iPhone….. please hold as I work to address. Hey guys! It’s been a while! Previously I’d only ever been able to have potted palms, but two years ago I (finally!) moved into a house and was able to start planting. A few of what are pictured below went into the ground the first chance I got, but I’ve added a lot this year and I’m feeling pretty good about the progress. It needs some more work, and many filler plants need to be added, but I’m really liking the progress. I’m considered zone 10a since the USDA zone update, but I’m less than 3 miles from zone 9b. Many of t…

Are there different types of Queen Palms?

2 of our neighbors have queen palms. But some of them look so much wider and longer, pretty fronds vs others that have shorter, straight up fronds. From what they both told me they are all Queens. Can there just be a big difference within Queens or are there different kinds? I love the longer more luscious, longer fronds look!

Buying palms on e-bay

🤬 Over the years I've bought a few things on e-bay but only ever used the pay now option. Last week I took the plunge and placed a bid on a lovely palm that was on auction. I checked it about 30 minutes before it ran out, I was still the only bidder so felt quite secure that the pretty pretty would soon be mine ....oh how easily the Internet plays false with our hearts. Some greedy creature had outbid me and my gorgeous palm was no longer to be mine. Woe and alas ! How does a poor silly woman outsmart these avaricious arseholes who stoop so low as to snatch a palm away from me so rudely. After a period of serious cogitation, I had a wonderful, brilliant solution that s…

Pritchardia Pacifica

This one spent almost an extra week in transit and arrived 2 days after the "late" arrival date from USPS. I know nothing about these, except I've wanted one for a few years now, and this is the first one I've ever seen in reality. I'm really impressed with the size for a 1g plant, and it's definitely ready for a bigger pot. It's nice and rooty! I'm just concerned, and maybe I'm paranoid. It looks kinda light to me, so I figured I'd ask the experts (y'all). I'm sure it's in shock but I'd be in shock if I spent 2 weeks in a box and USPS trucks too. 4am cocktail for scale, don't judge me I just got off work.

Butia hybrids

After discovering a nice looking and mature Butia not far from me, I collected a pile of previous seasons seed off the ground and have had good success with germination. Re -visiting the tree recently to check for fruit, it has an abundant crop with some almost ripe and getting close to 40mm in across which I think are large for this one. In this small town there where the usual suspects for WA, Phoenix canariensis, Washingtonia robusta, Howea forsteriana, Archintopheonix Cunningham I and the Syagrus romanzofiana. This has me wondering as to the chances or likelihood of the seed I’m collecting being incidental hybrids with Syagrus so I thought to ask here if anyone with …

I’ve been looking on here so much my head is spinning! We just redid our backyard but the last thing we need to do how is to landscape and I am struggling! trying to incorporate a tropical feel with the landscape including some smaller to medium palms that can withstand the Sacramento heat and weather. Also the cold! this is our yard. Ive been trying to find a variety of palms that aren’t going to go tall like queens but more of a smaller to medium look maybe? I’m new to learning all of this though so it’s a bit overwhelming trying to figure it out. And our landscaper isn’t a “palm” guy so it’s up to me to figure it out. some I’ve l…

I visited Palm Island Nursery in Vacaville, California in late March over spring break. The people there were very friendly and gave me a tour. I was struck by the size and variety of palms they had, including several reclaimed specimens. Here are some pictures from my visit:

I think i have a sabal palm in the back yard of my new home in Venice, Florida. There is a schefflera growing out of the side of the palm. It has grown tremendously in the last few months. I don't know if this is detrimental to the palm tree and whether the schefflera should be removed. I believe I read that scheffleras are invasive. I am concerned about my palm tree. You can see the schefflera in the attached picture on the right.

Budget Nursery Ideas?
by JohnAndSancho- 4 replies

Spring is here, and the summers are always crazy hot and swampy. I want to kind of expand past the Future Spider Mite Factory™ in my bedroom, and Lord knows y'all sent me plenty of seed, a lot of which I still haven't started to germinate. I had an idea last night and wanted to bounce it by y'all, something that would hopefully let me start sprouting a bunch of stuff outdoors. What if I were to lay some Harbor Freight tarps down over grass, and get some rebar and chicken wire to (HOPEFULLY, key word HOPEFULLY) keep the cats out? I can weigh the tarps down/help anchor the rebar with cinder blocks, there's a nice pile of them. I've got concerns with drainage doi…

Pindo palms

Hello! I love the how the canary date palms look but they are way too big for where we want to put some palm trees and when I saw a Pindo palm, it kind of reminded my of a canary, just a lot smaller. But I didn’t realize it looks like the drop fruit? Are these messy? How long to they drop fruit?
