Sabal minor 'Welfare' & Sabal minor 'High Springs'
by PalmatierMeg- 1 reply

I collect rare specimens of the variable Sabal minor, esp. those that are dwarfs or uber dwarfs. I got many of those from Plant Delights Nursery, which offers Sabal palms sporadically, sometimes as one-off sales. When they have one I want, I know to order quickly because it may never be offered again. Such is the case for two different Sabal minors I pounced upon nearly two years ago and haven't seen since. I have them in my garden lot where they have gone pinnate. Today I took photos of them. They are quite distinct. Sabal minor 'Welfare', Texas aka the "Poor Scrub" palmetto This palm occurs as a population in grasslands near the ghost town of Welfare in Kendal…

spear pull on a transplanted palm
by necturus- 1 reply
I have a few palms I transplanted that subsequently had spear pull. Mixture of mules, JxS, and BxPJ. So far their other leaves are mostly green and look okay. The JxS looks to be putting out a new leaf, thank God. No evidence of new spears from the others. I had a Butia yatay that spear pulled in the ground for no particular reason during the summer time. The other leaves looked perfectly normal for almost a year before they finally gave up the ghost. Never put out another leaf. I am not exactly sure what the problem was, but I have had a few other palms in that area die mysteriously. Sometimes I wonder if I should cut back most of the remaining leaves to expos…

Why did the new leaf turn brown at this area overnight? Not enough water, pests or too much sun?

Needed palm for tough spot
by marinkeith- 1 reply

I have a place in my yard that I've struggled to find the right palm. It is against the front of my house in a 2 foot wide planting strip, in 10A climate, about 20 feet under the eaves. The challenge is that it is the north west corner of the house, which has a north, north west exposure. This means that for 9 months the spot is shaded. But in the longest days of the year, it has harsh afternoon sun from noon until dusk - we are on a south facing slope that bakes in summer. So initially I had put in a couple of Hedescepe, which did great most of the year but fried as soon as the days got long and the sun came over the eaves in the afternoon. This is a prime spot, so…

I need to dig a 2 foot deep trench around 4 feet (1.2m) from the trunk of a queen palm Syagrus romanzoffiana. The tree is 6 meters high and has a branch canopy of about 2.5 meters in diameter Is there a risk to destablizing or damaging the vitality of the tree from digging the trench this close.

Washingtonia Filibusta Seedlings
by sonobeau- 1 reply

Howdy Y'all, Backstory: So I've been on the hunt for some Washingtonia Filibusta and have been having a hard time finding what I believe to be genuine sources for them. After enquiring about a listing for "Washingtonia Filibusta Seedlings" on Ebay, which I thought were much too expensive for Washingtonia seedlings, a guy told me a story about them that seemed really authentic & made me more willing to purchase even though I've been very skeptical about purchasing certain things on Ebay. Sadly, I was waiting until payday to purchase some and a couple days after my interaction with the seller he ended the listing early to focus solely on local sales. So now I've no…

My first palm (kentia palm)
by Lisa1997- 1 reply
Hello fellow palm friends I got my first ever palm tree 3 weeks ago and she did great! Now i just spotted a few brown patches on some leaves and I'm worried.. Google told me it's due to overwatering but I hardly watered her as the soil was still a bit moist further down. She is not getting direct sunlight but is living besides a window (north - west facing) and has no pests. It's also quite humid and warm where I live. Even though I just got her, I'm pretty sure those brown/grey patches are new.. any idea what I'm doing wrong? Thanks for your help! Lisa

Can I clean my latania trunk? Is mine big enough?
by MattyNativeSeed- 1 reply
Hey yall. Can I pull the dead fronds husks off my latania trunk, or should I leave them? If I can, is mine big/old enough to do so? I tried to pull some off but they were pretty hard to get off, so I stopped. It's not about look, I don't mind the look with the palm remnants. I'm a little worried about fungus. I've seen armillaria elsewhere in the yard, and just saw some mushrooms pop up in the fronds after some really wet weather. I don't think it's armillaria, the shrooms look too small. And armillaria doesn't attack palms too often, but they definitely aren't totally immune. So I want to help it defend wherever I can. Thanks guys!

World's slowest Bangalow

Planted this 1 September 2018. Got it dirt cheap from the local Greengrocer - all their palms for sale look great, almost too perfect for the tiny planter bags they are in and are very cheap- I suspect they are greenhouse grown and heavily liquid fertilized. Poor thing saw low of 1C (33F) it's first night in the ground and proceeded to sulk all summer, all the fronds gradually turning brown and the spear that was emerging at time of planting just not moving. But finally during the last month or so the spear was definitely getting longer and now it is opening and looks good, nice and dark green. Photos just after planting, and this evening. So the lesson is …
