What are the chances

So I stopped by Jimbos Nursery this morning to pick up some bromelieads (which they specialize in) to fill in some gaps in a planter. Anytime I go there you never know what you might find. They usually order a couple loads from some nurseries in Florida every growing season. So I was snowing around one of there shade houses when I saw these bad boys haha If anyone goes to pick up one of these zone pushers you gotta let me know. Only time I have ever seen a Cyrtostachys Renda for sale was in Maui 🤯The 2nd palm was a 25g Licuala Grandis grown to perfection which i never knew was so armed as all the ones i have killed were always small. There was a couple other zone pushers …

Butia hybrids

After discovering a nice looking and mature Butia not far from me, I collected a pile of previous seasons seed off the ground and have had good success with germination. Re -visiting the tree recently to check for fruit, it has an abundant crop with some almost ripe and getting close to 40mm in across which I think are large for this one. In this small town there where the usual suspects for WA, Phoenix canariensis, Washingtonia robusta, Howea forsteriana, Archintopheonix Cunningham I and the Syagrus romanzofiana. This has me wondering as to the chances or likelihood of the seed I’m collecting being incidental hybrids with Syagrus so I thought to ask here if anyone with …

Pritchardia Pacifica

This one spent almost an extra week in transit and arrived 2 days after the "late" arrival date from USPS. I know nothing about these, except I've wanted one for a few years now, and this is the first one I've ever seen in reality. I'm really impressed with the size for a 1g plant, and it's definitely ready for a bigger pot. It's nice and rooty! I'm just concerned, and maybe I'm paranoid. It looks kinda light to me, so I figured I'd ask the experts (y'all). I'm sure it's in shock but I'd be in shock if I spent 2 weeks in a box and USPS trucks too. 4am cocktail for scale, don't judge me I just got off work.

I had no idea a queen palm could be so colorful!
by junglegalfla- 32 replies

I bought a couple queens to provide some quick canopy. I was inspired when I saw how beautiful they can be in Rusty's (Pine Island) yard. Today I noticed some things on both of them. First, what great coloration one of them is showing! Of the 2, only this one has this gorgeous wine coloration. I did not rub away that powdery film (what is that called anyway?) I have a question about the other. It has an abnormal shape, bulges really. I suspect from too much water up take? My question is, if I lay off the water, will this go away or is this going to be some weird mutant?

I think i have a sabal palm in the back yard of my new home in Venice, Florida. There is a schefflera growing out of the side of the palm. It has grown tremendously in the last few months. I don't know if this is detrimental to the palm tree and whether the schefflera should be removed. I believe I read that scheffleras are invasive. I am concerned about my palm tree. You can see the schefflera in the attached picture on the right.

Budget Nursery Ideas?
by JohnAndSancho- 4 replies

Spring is here, and the summers are always crazy hot and swampy. I want to kind of expand past the Future Spider Mite Factory™ in my bedroom, and Lord knows y'all sent me plenty of seed, a lot of which I still haven't started to germinate. I had an idea last night and wanted to bounce it by y'all, something that would hopefully let me start sprouting a bunch of stuff outdoors. What if I were to lay some Harbor Freight tarps down over grass, and get some rebar and chicken wire to (HOPEFULLY, key word HOPEFULLY) keep the cats out? I can weigh the tarps down/help anchor the rebar with cinder blocks, there's a nice pile of them. I've got concerns with drainage doi…

Could use some help…

My husband and I planted two Adonidia palms and two Pygmy date palms in our backyard in Dunedin Florida. Two Adonidia and one Pygmy date were planted 3 months ago and the other Pygmy one month ago. Our soil is not the greatest, mainly sand, but the nursery told us that we did not need to amend the soil saying it was better to plant in native soil. I’m thinking it was a mistake. We have one of each type on the right side of our yard which is always in full sun and the other two are currently getting morning shade but will soon be full sun The pictures below are the plants that are in full sun. These are the worst of the 4 palms however, the other Adonidia is s…

Does anyone grow true Ravenea moorei?
by Bill Baker (Kew)- 4 followers

Long post alert!! Please persevere...! We have a fabulous male Ravenea moorei in the Palm House at Kew, but we fear that it is the only individual alive in cultivation. It is also possible that the species is extinct in the wild. We are currently planning a major restoration and our R. moorei will be dug up and moved – risky business. While we make plans to do this, we are anxious to understand the broader situation with this species, both in the wild in the Comoro Islands and in cultivation. This is where PalmTalk comes in! Does anyone believe that they grow Ravenea moorei? It has been confused in cultivation with R. hildebrandtii. See photos below. The two spe…

Hello! I love the how the canary date palms look but they are way too big for where we want to put some palm trees and when I saw a Pindo palm, it kind of reminded my of a canary, just a lot smaller. But I didn’t realize it looks like the drop fruit? Are these messy? How long to they drop fruit?

by Abetampa- 16 replies

Bismarck Palm Septic tank / drain field question Hello! I’m not sure if this is the correct place to post this. I just got my septic tank cleaned and I was unaware of where the drain field is located (I was told differently by previous home owner) This septic cleaning guy told me he believes it is in the front of the house. My question is : is this Bismarck Palm dangerous for the drain field? He told me he thinks it’s fine, but I’m worried. Any thoughts? Pics provided The left circle is the tank, right circle is the distribution box then he said he thinks the drain field is there to the right and the Bismarck is on the right side

Need help with identification

Hello, I just bought a house in Rockport, Texas (on the coast). The yard is full of different plants and trees that I want to learn how to take care of. I haven't been able to identify the palm in the photo, I used two different plant ID applications, one came back with a California Fan Palm and another with Chinese Fan Palm. I would very much appreciate if someone could help with identification. It clearly needs help but I have no idea how to take care of it, so any pointers would be welcomed. It's a beautiful palm and I'm happy to have it on the property, so I definitely want to keep it healthy. If I can develop a green thumb there's room for more palm…
