Washed ashore germinated Nypa fruticans seed - update...

Hi, as some of you may remember, an already germinated Nypa fruticans seed was washed ashore at one of our beaches this year's July. Because I have never seen one of them before and wasn't sure about it at all, I asked the palm community for an ID... ..and got it ID-ed within hours. Thanks a lot again! Since this is truly a very seldom find on our island, I will to do my best to make it happy. I have still no idea how to deal with it when gaining real size but there will be a solution one way or the other. Until then, here are some shots taken during the last few weeks... Day one - it was almost boiling at the…

Hey palm people 👋 I read some other posts on here with people asking if it’s ok to paint or spray palm tree trunks with a varnish or a sealant. I notice the opinions in the posts vary but it seems like most people agree varnished palm trunks look unnatural. Still, I like the look. Actually, I like the look A LOT. If it’s safe, effective and won’t cause rot or any other issues I’d diamond cut and varnish every Sylvester palm I could 🤩 But I don’t want to do it if it’s damaging to palms. I did a bunch of research and found when diamond cutting a Sylvester palm it’s best to use a battery powered multi tool with a titanium oscillating flush cutting blade opposed to a ma…

New member, but have been getting some good info from everyone on this site for a while. Started getting some palms a few years back and got inspired to start a bigger garden. In DeBary FL, about 30 miles north of Orlando. Progress so far: 2 B. Alfredii, one on the left planted from a 15g in June 2022, other went in this week from a 25g. Archontophoenix Cunninghamiana planted from a 7g in November 2021. Side yard has a couple of flamethrowers, Chambeyronia Oliviformis, another king palm, Lanonia Dasyantha, Caryota Obtusa, Chamaedorea Radicalis x Cataractarum (most likely) and Chamaedorea Microspadix. Plenty of other tropicals mixed in, big fan of Plumerias.…

Yearly palm sprouts! Identification?

I think it’s a type of washingtonia as they are pretty much like weeds here but just want to know. Their seeds are everywhere here even on sidewalks. Picture 1 are the two new ones. Pictures 2 and 3 are pictures of a Washingtonia that I have never watered or given nutrients to but has been growing at a snails pace since 2022. Picture 4 is one that I thought was gone but has shown new green growth, it originally sprouted last April.

What is happening to my king palm?

Happy Monday! Something weird is happening to our king palm. We planted these 6 years ago. First there is a gaping split going up one side, it is pretty deep. The other new thing that just happened is that large growth on the side. It is like two inches thick. As you can see by the photo, the smaller palm on the left has had problems as well. What do you think is happening? Is that pink rot? For reference, we live in San Diego, California. Thanks in advance for your help.

European Fan Palm Dying

Hi, I am new to this site and glad I found it. I live in Marco Island Florida and can’t figure out why my fan palm is dying. I have 4 palms and have had to cut trunks off of some of them in the past due to browning leaves. This time the issue seems to be affecting the entire tree. The palms were planted a couple years ago. Any advice would be appreciated!

The Mystery “Brown Palm”
by knell- 1 follower

full disclosure: this is a wacky ID request and long story When I left for Hawaii back in 2017, my friends and relatives inherited my California palm collection, which was full of… rather ambitious species for California, mixed in with practical things like Jubaea and Howea. My parents got the bulk of it with all the leftover bags of seeds and anything my friends didn’t want, which they weren’t too thrilled about and did not seem to give much care or attention to (understandable). So, most of the seedlings perished. There was one notable exception, a palm that my non-plant-person father chose to take care of because it was an unusual shade of… brown. …

Rhopalostylis Sapida in Habitat, New Zealand 1 2 3 4

Just had the chance to explore some of the mainland Nikau Habitat on the West Coast of the South Island, and collect some seed. Never spent much time looking into this palm in habitat but it's incredible the variation depending on location, above/below canopy, and distance to the coast. Underneath the canopy they spread very wide, almost like Coconut or bangalows... there was many with green fronds below horizontal. After getting above canopy they turn into the typical shuttlecock shape. Also amazing to see hundreds of seedlings like grass around some really old ones in the forest. Enjoy..

Almost 20 years ago I escaped the frozen tundra of Michigan and moved into the sauna of NW Orlando. It's hard to describe the abrupt transition, but I was pretty sure that I moved into an oven. Despite the oppressive heat and humidity in the summer, it was far better than spending September-April indoors and never seeing the sun! I lucked out when I moved, as I bought very cheap just before a huge price jump in the Orlando housing market. I found a nice house on about 3/4 acre of land with a great looking canopy of about 40 big oaks and a few pines. What I did *not* luck out on is my ignorance of southern oak trees. I didn't know that they were *not* the typical…

South Florida hobby nursery

Hi all, just purchased 15 acres in South Florida, zone 11a - the property has a crop of field grown Sylvester Palms ready for market. Previous owners have been selling them (uncertified) for a while, but there are about 150 nice ones left that are 4-8' clear trunk. We do have irrigation throughout, so these are nice trees and within a week of moving in a few folks started poking around about buying the rest of the crop. I try to do things by the book, so got our state inspection/certification and am ready to sell. I have a guy who will buy the lot for $50 per foot of clear trunk, which seems low avg for wholesale but he will do all the work. This will provide a nic…

proper spacing for Bismarkia ?
by Darold Petty- 1 follower

A local friend has a very large yard on a hillside, and wishes to install two Bismarkia palms down the hillside from his deck. What is the proper spacing so that the mature crowns will be close, but not overlap ?? Palmpedia suggests that the crown is 14 to 16 feet in diameter, so that would indicate perhaps 20 feet on center ? Thanks !

I have a sick palm tree - looking for advice on saving it. I see a lot of brown palms here in coastal Alabama this spring but this one tree is really worrying me. I've trimmed (it needs it again), fertilized, adjusted water... It still seems sick. It's sister on the other side of the driveway is doing fine. Can it be saved? Any help is appreciated. Thanks. JR

Do kentias/ Howeas grow in Florida?
by jeevesjank- 1 follower

A few months ago I moved from San Diego to Vero Beach FL on the barrier island. Kentia Palms or Howeas were my favorite species I'd seen growing in San Diego. I have yet to see any since my move to Florida, granted I see quite a few species of palm I didn't see in SoCal, Coconuts, Royals, Foxtails, Christmas palms, Bottle palms etc... Do people just choose not to grow kentia's because they have the option of growing coconuts, or is there something specific regarding Florida's climate that makes it inhospitable for them?

Butia pollination
by luke.m- 1 follower

I have been collecting fruit and seed locally of what I believe is Butia oderata. I’ve noticed from the same cluster of fruits a real difference in nut and fruit size. For all appearances it looks as though the first group of fruits to ripen have viable seed and those ripening now don’t, and the shift is consistent. The first ripening fruits where large averaging 35mm with the nice big seeds, those ripening now are more like 25mm with a very small seed. Can anyone share any info as to experience with pollination of butias as the fruits are well developed but seemingly with unviable seed. Is this a normal occurrence with palms? Can these make fruits without pollinati…
