Palm comapnion plants 3
by Gbarce- 5 replies

Inspred by the new post on palm landscapes this post is on the "Full sun" part of our house where I plan to feature palms. It pretty pathetic now. I tool out most of teh old plants (small heliconias, tropical bulbs and lillied etc...) and just left the plams that were there. My basic idea is to cover the area with grasses and low growing stuff so that when the palms grow, one can have an unobstructed view of the palm tree. basically a place where you can feature your speciman plants. I am new to palms and most of the palms I like are just new introductions to our country so its either there are no large specimens available or I simply cant afford a larger plant…

I planted two Hyophorbe spindle x bottle palms about 4 year ago, growing well but both look like spindles. There is a difference though in the colour of the rachis. One is golden yellow and the other is lime green. What have I got do you think. Plant one, yellow rachis:

THese are coccothrinac crinita var. bevicrencsi (?) the short hair old man palm. What are the whitish gray specks? should I be worried? Is this fungus? Backgrounder: I powder coated them with Dithane (a fungicide) before I soaked them in water for 2 days changing the water daily, Then placed them in plastic containersfith moist shredded coconut fibers and placed the containers near airconditioner exhaust vents so they are in a fairly warm to hot enviroment.

Save our Baby Palms
by swolf- 9 replies

I'm a rookie here, but would prefer to skip the costly rookie errors. I've got my first couple of 1 gallon baby palms that I'm trying to care for, but need to be pointed in the direction of the best protection (cage etc.) to save these young palms from an untimely death via any number of roaving animal threats. With limited time, I'd rather not turn this into a home construction project if I can buy a ready-made cage or other structure to shield these palms. Nothing at Home Depot that their employees were aware of. Any other sources, or alternately, what methods have some of you used to save your palms from an encounter with their "Terminator" (anti-Germinator)? …

Killed my white washingtonia
by JD in the OC- 25 replies
- 2.2k views
While perusing through a batch of germinated washingtonia seed, I found a white sprout. It looked like a weed or paint chip at first, so I pulled it out, only to find it was a washingtonia that is as white as snow! Is there any chance I can revive it? I pulled the leaf out of the seed/root part of the plant. I presume the palm's heart is still in the seed/root part, but I planted the leaf anyway to see if it sets root.

Heterospathe negrosensis
by NatureGirl- 1 reply

Does anyone have a nice picture of H. negrosensis? (Bo?)I have seen the ones on the Fairchild site. Is anyone growing this in full sun in Florida? My H. elata does fine in full sun, but from what I've read this is a smaller understory palm. But a friend has a rather large one in his yard and it looks quite a bit bigger than I had read or imagined. Thanks

Growth rate
by xerophyte_nyc- 9 replies
- 8.1k views
Palm growth rates are often described as fast, moderate or slow...what exactly does that mean? I have a Bottle Palm in a pot, I know it is slow but what exactly is "slow"? Shall I expect 1 or 2 new leaves per year? Or 1 inch of trunk height a year? What then is fast? 4-5+ leaves a year? Also, I realize that the following question may not have an answer, but is there some sort of normal % increase in the number of leaflets or length per frond as a juvenile palm gets older? For example, a seedling may have say a dozen fused leaflets per frond, and with each successive frond, they get bigger until the adult leaf size is attained - is this a predictable growth …

Is this Dypsis albofarinosa?
by tanetahi- 28 replies
I could not find a label for this pair of palms with stiffly ascending, nikau-like fronds, with a heavy farinose bloom on the trunk and crownshaft. I assumed it was D. albofarinosa, until I looked this evening at photos of the latter species in the palmtalk archive, which show plants with arching pinnae very much like D. onilahensis. So what is this?

Hurricane preparation
by Guest Lucinda- 6 replies

I am germing lots of seeds and also have many young plants not yet ready to go in the ground. They're sitting outside in my yard in 1, 2 and 3 gallon pots. Some are in a little shade house (pretentious name for what is really a Plant Tent), others are simply on tables under the trees. Being on West Coast Florida, all these babies are in peril. I'm interested in learning what others in Hurricane/Typhoon-prone areas do to protect fragile young plants when a major storm is on the way. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Lucinda

I found some pictures that I thought were deleted. They were taken in 2003 but I don't know the month. Anyway, you can see the growth rates of some of these palms here in SD. The current pictures were taken in either May or June of this year. Some of the stuff looked horrible in 2003 when it was first put in. hyophorbe lagenicaulis 2003 hyophorbe lagenicaulis 2007
