So I got this P rupicola seedling a handful of months ago, it’s seemed to slowly decline, is looking really yellow. I’ve fertilized it with palm fertilizer with micronutrients, and also ironite. It’s had sufficient water, hasn’t been exposed to freezing temps. Any ideas what I need to do?

I've been meaning to start this thread for awhile now, but have been too busy with the work that this new property has needed to have much free time to post about it. We are rained in here on the Big Island for a few days, so the time has come to finally document this project and what will soon be our new home here on the Big Island of Hawaii. Quick recap, our family moved from Fallbrook, CA to Hilo, Hawaii in 2017. We have a great home in town on 1/2 acre of land. You can read all about the creation of that garden here. It's amazing how quickly you can fill up 1/2 acre here, especially when there was already some existing fruit trees and landscaping that we ha…

Who grows this palm? I have only one, planted so I can see the new red leaves from my house. Please post your photos and experiences with this palm. As you see the striking red color fades in about a week but lovely. August 13, 2021 August 16, 2021 That's a Meryta to the right and one of the "palm imitators" as a tall ground cover below. Stem of a bamboo orchid to the left and many tree ferns. A little of my Rhopaloblaste elegans in the top photo. August 20,2021

Trachycarpus germination

Hi guys, After my first summer of seed germination trials most of my seeds have germinated and the ones that havent are healthy and just biding time (I used the process in Kris' thread). All except for the trachycarpus seeds. I have looked and looked across the internet and have tried pearlite/vermiculite medium and a peat medium and I cannot seem to get them to grow. Most of the things I found said they should germinate within a month or so but of my T. latisectus all but one have rotted and my T. waggie and windmill seeds are still holding up but I dont know for how long. I did make the mistake of putting them with the rest of my seeds (outside where it is hot) at th…

A couple of years ago I went big with the seeds germinating around 4000 on mass Johannesteijsmannia kerriodoxa lanonia and many other varieties bottom heating 30 degrees Celsius coco peat perlite mix styrofoam box’s lined with plastic so the roots didn’t through the styrofoam iam still using the heat mats today only on a smaller scale (that is most likely going to grow into a science project out of control again) I had a pretty good high germination rate all round using this technique had a little trouble with the plastic tubs drying out on the bottom mostly in the middle due to 3 months of constantly 30 degrees so iam not going to use plastic tubs again only styrofoam b…

Hi. I'm new here. I live in Ohio and my son dragged this poor plant to my ungreen thumb home. He left it out front and we got a surprise freeze and it was outside almost a week before he brought it inside. Is it a goner or can I salvage it? I do not have a green thumb but it was looking pretty when he brought it home.. now it's just sad sitting there. I know nothing about plants

These newly planted palm trees near me are approx 12' to 14', from ground to top of fronds. The base looks like a bottle palm, however the fronds are much more vertical (which is what I want), rather than outward growing like a typical bottle palm.

I need help finding the best method to germinate a whole lot of seeds. I recently stumbled across someone throwing away 2 infructescences and took them home with me. I have a minimum of 150 ripe seeds. Total seeds maybe 400. Just looking for an effective way to get them going without doing a crazy amount of work. I don’t want to wait too long to avoid them going bad.

Seed Salvaging

Y'all remember a couple months ago when I snatched that MASSIVE palmetto inflourecense, and it was full of seed weevils? And I stuck it in the freezer for way too long? Welp I thawed it. And soaked them in water and extra peroxide. I knew there was gonna be some funk involved. I scooped off the floaters from the top. The water turned black. I don't know if it's the peroxide killing the funk, or extra funk, but there's.... Let's just say these don't smell pleasant, it's a peroxide and vinegar stink. These are not rare high demand plants but I wouldn't mind growing another 20 or 30 but I ain't gonna lie. I don't wanna clean them but I also don't want community …

Texas Palm Lovers' Advice Requested
by donalt- 4 replies

hello from Florida! As you know, we are about to experience a wallop of arctic cold similar to the one you endured in February 2021. So, I'm asking your advice and tips on how to proceed . I'm especially interested in those of you in extreme southern Texas (like Brownsville) .....how did palms such as Royals do after the freeze? Did they recover? What about adonidia palms (Christmas palms)? Did they survive? Bottle Palms? What about plants such as crotons? Any information you can help with would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!!

Areca Palm Hedge in Orlando
by sacts- 6 replies

I currently have a podocarpus hedge on the side of my yard that is too close to my pool and I have plenty of room to create a new hedge farther out. I really like the look of Areca palms and I have a couple in my yard that do well. With that said, I've been told that a cold spell could kill the hedge if I were to use areca palms. Anyone have any experience with an Areca hedge in the Orlando area?

Hello all. Longtime lurker, first time poster here. I'm curious if the group can point in the right direction for an ID for two palms. The first is from my neighborhood here in Los Angeles. A very attractive, slender, colorful palm. Seems to grow in clumps. The second, I saw on a trip to Mexico City. It looks almost like a Washingtonia but I have a feeling it is not... Thanks for your advice.

I noticed the other day that my Hyphaene compressa has decided to branch. As with the other hyphaenes, they all branched at the ground level - none have branched above ground. I cut off all of the ground level branches so it grew faster. It is now over 20' tall and has decided now to branch - a first for my hyphaenes! I've included a photo of it. BTW, it has not flowered as yet - so no idea whether male or female. Right in the center of the photo you will notice 2 petioles next to each other. I'll try to post another photo next year when it is more noticeable. rod phoenix

Coconut palm does well after 33 degrees and 25 mph winds!!! (record cold)

My coconut palm surrounded by 3 walls did fine in the extreme cold in Jax Florida. It’s bright red so possibly a variety like red spicata is more cold tolerant. After this wheather event it only had some yellow spots and very mild burns at the tips. Maybe I got a cold hardy variety, it was off Facebook marketplace. I still had to cover the trunk.

Which one of these 3 palms?
by Solino- 36 replies
- 1.3k views
Hi, Been reading the forum for a long time but never posted before. I live in Clearwater FL. I have a spot in my backyard I would like to put one of these 3 large palms. The spot is on a slope and it's very unlikely to ever get standing water (the bottom of the slope is around 5 feet from the top, and that does get occasional standing water after heavy rain, however the palm would be placed near the top). The 3 palms I am thinking about are: Hyphaene thebaica Hyphaene compressa Borassus aethiopum I know these 3 are all palms that tend to like drier climates but I am thinking they should all be able to adapt to Clearwater in a place…

Leaf spear and bugs - Ravenea glauca

Hello, i have a young Ravenea glauca and noticed one of the newer fronds suddenly die during our rainstorm. Came out today to check and the leaf spear and any emerging fronds completely fell out. The inner most fronds has these maggot type worms. salvageable? Should I pour hydrogen peroxide? I am in Orange County, CA. This palm really took off this last year and was one of my first ones planted - super bummed!

Question, when wrapping palm with miniature Christmas lights, after bundling all the fronds up, do I wrap the entire tree from the bottom of the trunk to the very top of the bundled fronds with lights, or do I just wrap from the bottom of the trunk up to the bottom of the spear starts with lights? I also plan on wrapping the entire tree in frost cloth over the lights. Just wondering what protects the fronds if I don't wrap the bundle of fronds with lights as well. Will be wrapping one royal palm and one foxtail palm (both about 15 feet). In Orlando area and temps may dip to the high 20s this weekend. Thanks.
