Ravenea glauca from Andringitra 1 2 3

One of the plants that I was looking forward to seeing in habitat was Ravenea glauca. As of right now there are two areas to see Glauca, one is Isalo where they grow in the canyons and make for the famous photo for palm lovers. In talking to Dransfeld, what we knew as Glauca will most likely become a new species. The second location is to go to the Andringitra area. This is where I just came back from and was excited to post some photos and details on this beautiful plant. Having seen both now, in my opinion it is easy to see they are two separate species. In Adringitra, there are two areas to view them - both require a 25 km jeep trail drive to Camp Catta. Onc…

Those rats again
by happypalms- 2 replies

You grow palms, you finally get a hold of that holy grail palm or that one you have wanting all your eternity in palm collecting, you go through all the hoops off importing your seeds, you finally get a few to germinate and you pot them up, place them outside and then in one night all are eaten by the rats. So iam not sure if this product is a good alternative to trapping and killing them. But the Wurth company seem to make good quality products, there have been a lot of products over the years that will take your money and do nothing in return except take your money. So if it works it may be a great little thing for the nursery.

Unusual Coloring Or Typical? Archontophoenix purpurea
by Jim in Los Altos- 10 replies

These three are my only Archontophoenix purpurea and I’m just wondering if the heavy black tomentum on their trunks is unusual or typical. Whichever it is, I like it. These were purchased as seedlings from Floribunda a few years ago.

Really a magnificent palm. Stout, but not overly large, moderate grower, and good color especially after losing a leaf sheath. Prominent basal leaves on extraordinary long fronds add to the picture. Planted early 2012 from a 1 gallon. Tim

We had wind gusts up to 35 mph. So far nothing fell or broke, but I haven't walked the two acres as it's also been raining. At least I'm saving irrigation money. 20260208_145221.mp4

C. decipiens May Be “Pregnant”
by Jim in Los Altos- 2 replies

The bulging crownshaft on this almost twenty year old Chrysalidocarpus decipiens makes me think there’s something good lurking underneath it. Could it be about to produce an inflorescence? Will have to wait ‘til the attached frond dies and falls off.

The palms we all talked about over here back in June are going to be exposed to the coldest weather around Orlando in 16 years this coming weekend with temps expected to be all the way down to 28 degrees. We went with these because they are supposed to be somewhat cold resistant but having temps drop below freezing around here is super rare so not sure what to do. We just got these back in June so they have only been in the ground for seven months. It's our first time going through this level of cold with these trees so what are we supposed to do to get them through this unprecedented artic blast? We have three of these two trunk trees in the same general ar…

Some have claimed the Newport Beach Coconut might be the farthest north in the ground with sustained growth, at around 33 degrees, 37 minutes latitude. Please submit any other farthest from equator claims - be sure to include exact latitude position, north or south.

Best mail order nursery for tropicals
by SCVpalmenthusiast- 11 replies

Besides Moon Valley Nursery which is exceptionally expensive, are there any other nurseries that ship and have mature palms. Im looking for mature 5ft Pheonix roebellinis, red abyssinian banana, ice cream/blue java banana plant, possibly some plumerias. I haven’t been very successful, most places in So Cal either don’t ship larger palms, or they only work with contractors.
