If indeed this is C mitis, obtained as Caryota sp., looks like C mitis to me, as a monocarpic palm will the flowering trunk soon croak?

Bismarckia transplant tips? Mine got vandalized

I cannot express the frustration of being a palm lover and not having a garden. I thought I hit the jackpot when my work said I could plant "whatever I wanted" on the grounds of the hospital I work at, since it already has irrigation set up and so many planting sites. After 4 years and thousands of my own dollars later, I am constantly hit with the maintenance shutting off water for "construction projects" without telling me - even after asking multiple times. Cannot count the number of times clearly marked palms with barriers around them have been mowed over, weed whacked to shreds, or just outright removed.... the latest assault has been on my flawless Bismarckia palm t…

My Chrysalidocarpus ( Dypsis) decipiens and my C. onilahensis are flowering. I saw pics of this supposed hybrid for sale here on Palmtalk. I am thinking to try to make this hybrid here. Do somebody has a pic of a more mature plant. What is the speed of growth? ( 2 pics of the collected onilahensis inflorescences) Thanks 20260219_203257.heic 20260219_203310.heic

Bumps on foxtail stems

Please tell me this is normal like the specks on D. Lutescens. It's on all the petioles, I don't see it on anything else, and I remember scraping and rubbing my first Lutescens almost raw trying to get them off before I learned they were part of the plant. This is one of @NOT A TA's sprouts, so it needs the good palm god vibes.

Oahu, HI Palms

Hey everyone. I’m taking a trip out to Oahu in April and would love to visit places on the island that have tropics! I already have Hoomaluhia BG scheduled, is there any other Botanical Gardens that are a must see? Any growers out there that have land that would provide a mini tour of what they’re growing? Any must see nurseries? I’m flying from Arizona so would love to see things that won’t grow in the desert. thanks!

Is this Queen Palm doomed forever?

Please look at these pictures and let me know what you think. I think it's pretty clear that this one is a goner. I planted it in the early summer with fertilized soil. I haven't fertilized since. It's been too cold at night. We also had a lot of rain last month. There's only one frond, and it's an ugly yellow green brown. I can't tell if the new frond is bad as well. It's so hard to get good pictures to show the color. Another taller palm next to it doesn't look good either. The fronds are really tall so it's hard to tell. I am in Southern California zone 9b and 10a. I appreciate any help I can get! Thank you!

Hey everyone! I live in Queen Creek Arizona and currently have mule palms and pigamy date palms in my yard. I just spent a week in Hawaii and fell in love with the tropical palms and plants here. I have a big area on the east side of my house that is currently empty and gets afternoon shade. I would like to plant a Royal Palm as well as a papaya tree, banana tree and birds of paradise. Am I crazy or is it doable? Any advice on how these plants do in the Arizona desert or how to take care of these plants to make sure they survive? Or any ideas where I can purchase these plants in the valley? thanks in advance!

Hi I haven't posted in a while but I still love palms. I mistook a pair of beautiful Latania loddigesii on Green Turtle Cay where we have a home. One was loaded with ripe fruit and I brought a number home (VT) to germinate & now have 3 lovely seedlings. I am very courius why they look somuch like a Red Latan I already had. Is this normal?

Some Veitchia Time

So, I was going to say......this is my favorite genus, but it seems almost every genus is my favorite. Ok, I really like this genus and it contains some wonderful species. Here are a few from the garden, from medium large to rather diminutive. Great leaf color and some interesting trunk/crownshaft marking. Easy grow, relatively pest and disease free and not fertilizer hogs. Veitchia subdisticha, a small grove of seven, full sun, and on a steep slope. They love the extra good drainage.

Hello Everyone! I came across this site while trying to do research myself and figured I would sign up and post to see if I could get some opinions! I am a Canadian who recently moved to Arizona (Phoenix area) and bought a brand new home with my wife. We are currently in the process of landscaping our bare dirt backyard. I grew up in Canada so I know nothing about palm trees but I always loved them whenever vacationing so I am super excited to finally live somewhere where I can put palm trees in my own yard. I am looking to plant multiple medium/large palms in the back corners of my backyard, which is on the south side of the house, as statement pieces…

I did some cleaning up today and in doing so, sprayed this palm down, removing all the debris it collects from the nearby myrtle. After washing it down, I just had to sit and gaze at it for a little while. I thought I'd share a picture with you all.

Another Fairchild Garden Visit

I have visited Fairchild Tropical Garden in Miami FL many times but always enjoy seeing new additions and checking on “old friends”. This Sabinaria caught my attention especially since it looks untouched planted outside despite the recent cold spell here. I eagerly await mine growing big enough to show off the gorgeous leaf shape and color! Below are two different Kerriodoxa elegans. Rhino beetles in Puerto Rico love these so not sure if I will get any to trunking size. I am really looking forward to seeing them in habitat in Phuket Island.Thailand on the soon to start IPS post tour. Calyptrocalyx albertisianus is a fairly new a…

Does anyone know anything about this species? A local nursery has a large multistem in stock. Is it a clustering palm? How much sun does it take? What are its low temp tolerances? Enquiring minds want to know! Thanks, JC

Livistona Australis , a welcome addition!
by Harry’s Palms- 5 replies

About 2-3 years ago while poking around one of my favorite nurseries in Ventura , I found a neglected palm that looked different than anything I had in my collection . It had a healthy spear growth and one , that’s right , just one nice frond that had just opened . The others were brown and tattered. It was in a fairly large container and I could tell by the base of the palm it had a bit of age to it . Priced at $150 , it was a good solid deal…..IF it was healthy . But it was clear that this guy was less than healthy . After getting an employee to help me with ID , I asked “ how much ?” I told him I would be interested if he marked it down a bit. He went and checked with…

How can I save these palm trees
by Nyhockeyref93- 12 replies

So here in Florida we had that cold front that did a number on all my Clusia plants and my two Christmas palms which are babies and were just put in the ground. The Sylvester palm is thriving great. what can I do to speed up the growth process? the Christmas palms have all turned brown and the new frond sprouting looks brown as well. They do seem to be alive, just need a lot of love. I have been watering them. Anything I can give them to help them.

I purchased these ones as poiveana, but again palmpedia says they are solitary palms. Most of these ones are suckering except for a couple of them. So what variety are they, one is flowering but not open so I might have to wait until they open for a proper identification perhaps.

Majesty palm heart

Hello! Does anyone know if majesty palm heart would be worth it to try? I love fresh heart of palm but I’ve only got the chance to try it once and just a tiny bit from a sprouted coconut. I have way too many majesty palms and I wanna get rid of one or two. I also tried some of a chamaedorea elegans and it made my mouth go numb, no side effects becides that though. I’ve also been trying to figure out if any palms are toxic. Yes I know fishtail palms are not good to eat because of crystals but that doesn’t mean it’s toxic. I mean life threatening toxic. I’ll do more studies too.
