My fiancee returned from a shopping trip to Houston 2 weeks ago with a coconut palm (oh, yes, and a wedding dress, too). Apparently, she got it at the Katy Freeway Ikea for $13. We had discussed previously the fact that neither in SA nor in Rockport could we reasonably keep a coconut healthy long term, but this one spoke to her. I am secretly pleased to have "converted" her to my palm religion. My question is: does anyone have any inkling what cultivar it is likely to be? How can I tell?

I will be taking vacation at Disney for 9 days and Coral Gables (Biltmore Hotel) for a liquor convention for a week. I wil then be traveling up to Melborne, Fl. to visit a friend for a day. I would like to know how close Fairchild Gardens are to the Biltmore? Also, I only have 1 day to view the gardens, any suggestions? Is the food ok at Fairchilds? Any info. to make the tour interesting would be appreciated. (Note: I have my wife and 2 1/2 year old and a 5 month old baby with me). I would also like to buy some 1 to 5 gallon seedlings of the following palms: Arenga Engleri Saw Palmetto (Blue Form) Dypsis Deciphens C. Microspadix C. radicalis C. metallica …

How do I keep cats out?
by BigWaveDave- 23 replies

The neighborhood cats love my mulch and keep pooping in it. The smell is getting to me and when I'm digging around in the dirt I'm always running into poop. Anyone know of any humane (I don't want the neighbors to get angry at me ) ways to keep the cats from pooping in my yard? David

I have a Veitchia arecina that has sent out 3 new fronds since the spring, not one of them has opened. The palm looks healthy but obviously is not. Anyone know what causes this?

Dypsis lutescens

Is this a good buy? I saw a few of these for sale a the local Home Depot for $69. There were many in a pot, about 4-5 feet tall and trunking already! A few of the plant are about 2 inches at the trunk! I was tempted to grab two of them but had to control myself. I already have 10 pots of these at home that I bought six months ago and are now about the size of my index finger.

Sabal Mauritiiformis

I planted 20 of the above in my field nursery(full sun) this spring from 3x9 liners...4-5 strap leaves. Those of you who survived our last heat wave can attest to its brutality...it was 112f here in Fallbrook. Happy to report all plants are doing just swell!!! Not even a pimple. Seems that they, like all Sabals, love heat and take full sun early.

Sy. botryophora seeds from Gileno
by Zac in NC- 9 replies
- 1.7k views
Hey all. I know several of us got Syagrus botryophora seeds from Gileno recently. I just checked on my seeds and I have 2 out of 4 with germination activity. I cracked the seeds and sowed them a little over a month back, and had 4 out of 5 viable seeds, the other one had been eaten by a nasty little bugger. How are everyone else's seeds/seedlings doing? Did you crack them, or leave them whole? Thanks. Zac

too bright for a chamae?
by Howeadypsis- 3 replies

My C elegans is on the north facing windowsill. Well, i thought it was N facing but it gets a fair amount of sun so its more like NW ish! Anyway, I believe this palm can take shade, and its fronds have sufered sun burn in the past due to a mistake on my part, but is producing newer, bigger darker fronds now. It seems OK where it is but Im still woried about the risk of sunburn so should I move it completely out of the way of sunlight? (on a shelf, away from the window for example)

Palms for Very Windy Locations 1 2
by Phil- 1 follower

I'd doing an article on Palms for Windy Locations. I have my own ideas of the best palms for such conditions. But, I haven't lived through hurricanes like some of you. And, I don't live on a mountain peak with whistling air outside. I've checked through our archives and didn't find this topic in the title search. So, I'd like your input on the palm species that seem to best survive very windy conditions. Thanks. Phil

nasty surprise when cleaning palm stem
by Howeadypsis- 5 replies
- 1.6k views
Yesterday I decided to clean off all the old dried leaf bases from the lower stem of my D lutescens, and on the left hand stem I found something a little disturbing! Theres a long hole there with all crumb like material near the mouth. I also saw thrips crawling around the base of the stems, but I didnt think these were harmful on this scale(thought they ate only the leaf surface) On the upside the palm does look much better without those old dried 'onion skins', and it shows good colour near the rootbase too! The two stems: the hole: healthy looking right hand stem: By the way, where would the crownshaft form on this palm? Cheers Larry

Learning To Appreciate Fan Palms
by Neofolis- 26 replies

I have voiced my preference for pinnate palms many times, but maybe lack of in the flesh exposure to fan palms may be to blame. Images really can't do justice to many of the fan palms I saw at Kew. Some of them I would definitely describe as magnificent. Below is a selection, also any ID's would be appreciated.
