Gaussia maya & Syagrus schizophylla
by Walter John- 10 replies

Hello Here's these two palms near each other right in the back corner of my place. The neighbours have removed a mango tree and grapefruit tree so now the winter sun will shine upon them. They've gone okay and should improve really. Gaussia maya after a quick old leaf clean up, interesting shades of green. Syagrus schizophylla

Palms are much happer when it rains. They open up new spears and just look healthier. We have had a few showers over the last few nights, and today is one of those humid, showery overcast days. Here's a few photos from my place... Areca vestiaria and his mates... Cryosophila stauracantha Cyphophoenix nucele regards, Daryl.

Pritchardia
by Tyrone- 16 replies
- 1.6k views
Howdy, I bought this Pritchardia labeled as "Pritchardia" some time ago. It was a little unhappy when I bought it, and it has grown substantially since I've potted it up, but it still gets white steaks on the leaves and never stays green. Does anyone know what Pritchardia it is and why I get these leaf problems? Best regards Tyrone

30 year old spindles
by Walter John- 6 replies
- 1.1k views
See the other tropical plants thread for a great cycad photo shoot, I also took a few photos of these spindle palms, planted in 1972 or there abouts. Really tall the first one. These palms seem to suffer the drought here better than any other palm in the gardens. Food for thought there. Here is the same fella at the crownshaft Here's another Here's another photo showing a mix including some very tall macarthur palms, see them ?

Putting my palm out
by Howeadypsis- 4 replies
You guys posting pics of palms after the rain got me thinking. I realise my D.lutescens wont take frost or hot sun but I was thinking of putting the pot out in the garden in the summer, somewhere semi shaded but where it can get a good soaking when it rains(and boy can it rain here!) What you all think?

Bentickia nicobarica

Can anyone help me with any inside information about this palm? I had one in the ground, but Hurricane Wilma bent it over and creased it. I have since planted another one, but I am not certain about it's requirements. Does anyone have a mature, fruiting Bentickia?

Any jobs avilable at nurseries abroad?
by kylecawazafla- 24 replies

I will be starting college in August and end high school in early June, and was hoping that during the inbetween time I could work somewhere I have never been before and pick up a new culture and maybe even a language. I was originally planning on going to school somewhere else, but it turns out that my parents told me I have to get a job, so I was wondering if anyone on this international forum could help connect me to one. I wouldn't only be interested in working at a nursery, but would be more than willing to. The farther the culture deviates from the US and the more tropical the place, the better. Thanks for the help. PM me or respond if you could help, or want to kno…

variagated palms?
by ricky- 5 replies
this is what im thinking if variegated palms are caused by a virus is it not possible to identify the virus and infect normal green palms to produce well a variegated palm surly if it is a virus this should not be difficult to do as most viruses spread like mad i know this goes against the grain as where normally trying to protect palms/plants from viruses but if this could be done just imagine the possibilities rows of variegated Washingtonians or variegated jubaeas now that would be a palm see now what do you think is it possible or is my thinking flopped regards ricky

Sealing Wax/Lipstick questions
by Palm Guy- 12 replies
Hi all, I'm new to the chat room and was wondering if someone could help me out. I ordered some sealing wax seeds in the mail which arrived about 2 weeks later. Im guessing they were plucked from the palm about a month ago. Are these still viable? Any tips for germinating these guys? Also, I live in Bermuda which is considered warm (very humid) subtropical zone 11 USDA. Winter is about 2-3 months with temperatures sometimes reaching 10C or 50 F. Average temps during winter are 69 H- 60L. Lowest temperature ever recorded was 43.6F no frost but high winds in winter. Year- round high humidity averaging 77% slightly drier in the winter. I did my research and found…

Just some updated pics from my mystery palm thread http://palmtalk.org/cgi-bin....hl=noid On another board, palmbob thought it to be a pinanga so now I am up to 8 possibles types. As you can see, it's still in a pot as I've no idea where to plant this thing yet. Still putting on quite the colorful show and it has a new spear emerging!

After my short trip to the palm laden Byron Bay areas, I had a good look at things here at home. Some recent leaves and potentials waiting for rain. I was surprised to see how the established plants are doing so well really. Hope you like: Syagrus schizophylla Gaussia maya Bismarkia with 3 spears waiting for a good flush of rain. Calling all Palm Authors!
by Bilbo- 10 replies

Whats the biggest problem newcomers have? Probably impatience in the first place and then bankruptcy when the bug takes a serious hold! Then the new guy discovers that many species grow faster with nitrogenous feeding and growth can be speeded up. Problem is that some books mention this and some dont. Likewise many palms are pH sensitive some preferring low pH some high pH. May I gently suggest to both new and established writers is that the simplest way around this without any need for extended re-writing is simply to have a small table which can be applied to any palm for instance * could stand for nitrate responsive and # for low pH required hence a Queen Palm wou…

Wodveitchia hybridization
by fastfeat- 17 replies
- 2.2k views
I stumbled across this Wodveitchia today at a small nursery in Loxahatchee, FL in a block of 5g Wodyetias; picked it up for $20 !! Sadly, the only one... Brings me to my questions regarding hybridizing Wodyetia and Veitchias: (1) Seems like there are "more" variegated Wodveitchias (attractive, but certainly less vigorous and more difficult to maintain) available in the marketplace than green ones. Any ideas on the genetics involved in creating the variegation in an apparently large percentage of seedlings? (2) What crosses, both relative to which Veitchia species and which is pollen or pistillate parent, result in a greater percentage of green offspring? Since…

Reuven's Palms - Part 2
by rubyz- 17 replies

This evening, I'll be pleased to present some pics of the various palms gracing my patio. I should point out that I have a number of palms standing on the perimeter of the patio, but since they are technically in the garden, I will show them, along with my other garden palms, in the next thread. Enough said! The pic below is that of my patio, with a view towards the garden, as seen from my living room.

OMG,roots!
by Howeadypsis- 1 reply

Just repoted my D.lutescens, and my god did it have some roots! I got a bigger pot prepped but put some polystyrene in the bottom as it was rather deep and I thought it would be wasted compost. Then it was time to unpot the palm. Well, I couldnt get the thing out the pot and had to cut the pot with scissors, wasting a good pot in the process. It was incredibly windy while I was out there too which was annoying the hell out of me(hate working in the wind) and the new compost was fairly dry and very light so I had to keep hold of it while filling with soil as well as keeping an eye on the kids! I then realised some of the polystyrene had to come out as once the palm was i…
