scientific names or 'common names'
by Palmy- 24 replies
- 2.2k views
I know the majority of people on this board, and probably every palm meeting, uses scientific names rather than common names. I am curious at how many people know practically every palm by the scientific name? I also am curious to know how many people know how to spell them. If I was to use the scientific name more often and yet have mistakes would that be ok? The mistakes will be somewhat major, but its kinda annoying looking up in the books every time I need a name or looking on the web. Or... Do you think looking every time will actually make me learn it? Just a curiosity question. Thanks Here are some palms which I somewhat know vaguely. There are tons of mistakes…

Some Irrigation Questions 1 2
by MattyB- 41 replies
- 3.2k views
Hey ya'll. I don't know if this belongs in this forum but here goes: I need to figure out how to irrigate my lot which is about 80-90 feet wide and goes down a rather steep slope about 500 feet. I was planning on running a PVC main all the way down along the property line. My water pressure is about 90 psi. What diameter pipe should my main be? Then I was planning on installing those electronic timer activated valves at regular intervals all the way down the hill so I could tap in and plumb stations as I landscape down the hill. How far a run can the low voltage timer wires be run down the hill to the valves and still function? I figure running a lot of wire i…

Why is my Bizzie "Bronze"? 1 2
by BS Man about Palms- 42 replies

I can't figure out why, but my Bismarkia has "bronze" fronds. Definately not the Green variety, but a long way from that silver or blue. Don't know if these pictures do it justice. They were that color within a week of opening, and they aren't "crispy". So, I'm not sure, you can see another just starting to open, and thats the color they started.

Strange hybrid

I was given a gift of a seedling that I was told was a cross between Zombia and Coccothrinax. After growing a bit and sinking that bad boy into the ground, it is getting up in size...but no characteristics of a Zombia at all. It is about 9 foot overall now...not yet showing clear trunk. No spines, no clustering, nothing. Has anyone ever heard of this cross, and if so, what do you know about it??

Allagoptera
by quaman58- 3 replies

Hey all, Prior to the freeze I'd been very fortunate and had lost only a couple palms. But one of them was a 2 gallon one of these that grew for a while, then slowed down to a crawl, and then just died. Here's a pic I posted last year of the unexplained demise..(Pulled spear) Anyway I heeded someone's suggestion to find a bigger one for sale. Lo and behold, as I was wandering about Phil's nursery (in the cycad section at that), I heard a barely audible noise that sounded like "buy me; buuuuuy meeeee". So I pulled away a couple cycad fronds and this Allagoptera-gone-pinnate was staring at me. Naturally I had ask my wife, "Can I keep him?". Now I just don't want …

Bismarck pic

This is a very nice Bismarck a few blocks away from my home. It's a very nice one in my opinion. Thought I'd share it. It's a female with seed trying to form, but as there are no males around it won't fully form. It makes you want to plant 3 or more when you see that sort of thing happening, but you need a bit of room to do that. regards Tyrone

After reading Bo's comments on this palm, I did some further research and viewing. I think he may be right. I also consulted Riffle and Craft's "Cultivated Palms" and the variety appears less tropical in requirements and appears potentially amenable to portions of California and South Florida.Does anyone have experience with the cultivation of this palm in the world and can examples be given? Also, Bo can you give information on your book that you refered to?

Types of mulch
by TikiRick- 22 replies
- 1.8k views
All, Just a thought. With all of the emphasis upon water conservation, we all are in agreement that heavily mulched palms perform better. However, has anyone ever made any conclusions about what types of mulch benefit palms (or hinder palms?) I use cypress mulch (not that red dyed stuff either!) only because it is so readily available here in Florida. However, I must admit that at times I feel guilty about the removal of a healthy cypress tree to be made into mulch. Is there any difference, from a palm's perspective regarding the type of mulch used? Wood (and what type of wood?) Rock (pea rock, lava, egg rock) Straw (pine) Rubber (recycled rubber tires) …

In the outstanding book by Riffle and Craft " Cultivated Palms" David Fairchild( Fairchild Gardens) is quoted regarding the fantastic beauty of the palm , which he identifies as his favorite.Mention is also made of a mature Pigafetta in Miami. However, there are no Pigafetta's at Fairchild. Can anyone comment on there locations and experiences with the cultivation of this palm? Any known in Florida or elsewhere in the world?

An Abandoned Palm
by Polar Palm Trees- 8 replies

I saw this palm when I was driving in Monroe N.C. today. It has been left without care for many years as there is hardly a clean frond boot on it. It just goes to show how tough butias are. This one with no care or protection and certainly no microclimate has survived for many years (BTW Monroe N.C. is a zone 7b-8a). I will have to keep my eye on this one because they are doing construction and they have already bulldozed a small grove of trees next to it. If this ugly old palm is in their way I would gladly take it off their hands! It was taken care of at one point because there is old weed-block fabric around it. It's possible that people in a house about 100…

Please help ID this Phoenix
by ania- 25 replies

Hi: This Phoenix palm comes from a seed of the Phoenix palms growing on the North Shore of Oahu. I noticed that it is producing very small fronds and a few offshoots at its base. Does anybody have any idea what that palm is? DactyliferaX? I also posted the picture of my Brahea armata (the precious gift from you guys). It finally started to pick up and after some problems, it looks like it likes it here. It has been in my lawn since early May 2006. Please take a look at my other precious "baby", my Jubaea which is 5 years old, and seems to like it here in Houston. Ania

NC Jub
by NCpalmqueen- 12 replies

It is difficult to properly photograph palms. I finally captured my jubaea so that the leaves are visible. OK--so it isn't the jub monster y'all are used to seeing, but, I gotta start somewhere! This jub has been in the ground going on 5 years here in the NC piedmont. It is growing in part shade in no special soil...mostly red clay. Grown from seed. The leaves are pushing 3.5' long. Although I now have several other jubs in the ground, this one is still the best looking. It has taken 11F gracefully. It also grows faster than my large sabal palmettos.
