Can you identify this variegated palm?
by Gbarce- 2 replies
- 1.4k views
When I bought the seedling the vendor told me it was avariegated Foxtail Palm (woodietia) but its obviously not now that its a bit grown up. The variegation is light green on green. more pronounced on young leaves but variegation gets darker as the leaves get older so its not as pronounced. Stilllove it though.

Gophers
by Scott- 32 replies

Hi - I noticed a string of holes along the side of the house. They're gophers alright . About 10' from my planted palms and bamboo . I know they love bamboo. Someone suggested getting poison from HD and putting it in the holes. Does that work? What kind is good? Or should I pay a professional. Everything in the garden is still pretty young and I need to get started quick - I haven't noticed any damage yet... knock on wood. Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Some more info for those of you interested in the debate a while back , including confirmation that only males were sold. Angelo from Italy . My Clinostigma is rotting from the outside in!
by Matt in SD- 21 replies

Hi All, I know there have been several pink rot threads on here lately, but I want to get some specific advice for this case. My Clinostigma savoryanum, my favorite palm, is in trouble. I noticed last week that the leaf that was shedding had a large brown patch sort of in the middle of the sheath and it wasn't falling off cleanly as they usually do. I found the brown patch was soft and rotten and after cutting it away found it filled with little black beetles. I cut the whole leaf off (it was ready to go anyways, no big deal), but then noticed the next leaf under it had some soft and rotten parts on the sheath as well, also full of beetles. So I cut away the rotten …

by iamjv- 8 replies

Tomorrow, 23 Jun, the Palm Society of South Texas will host a society meeting at Mercer Gardens (Houston) where we will dedicate a custom made bench to our friend Bob Riffle. The bench is situated in a beautiful garden setting looking back at one of Bob's favorite palms in the gardens-a Livistona Saribus. Members will meet for lunch at La Cabana Mexican Restaurant at noon near the gardens. At 2pm, the ceremony will start in the gardens, where some words of praise will be spoken remembering our friend and we'll formally dedicate the bench. Afterwards we'll meet in the reception room for refreshment and visitation. A big thank you goes out to our own Jana …

Dypsis acuminata
by Walter John- 12 replies

Hi, part of our Mount Tamborine outing today included a visit to the Bamboo world nursery. Here we found some nice palms including what I purchased as Dypsis acuminata. It is a clumper with purplish crownshaft as a juvenile, thin leaflets, I'll show a pic later, for now I just wanted to know if anybody has heard of it or has one. It may be Dypsis acuminum, a name I found on the web.

Some night shots

I just stopped by Phil's the other day at Jungle Music. [Good seein' you Phil] I picked up a nice 3 gallon cyphosperma balansae (probably his last one at this size) Definitely my all time favorite palm. And also a Ravenea sp. He was suprised that I found one at this size. We had no idea what it is or what it will look like. Jesse did show me a Ravenea "Angora" in a 15 gallon pot and it had shiny leaves, that was cool! But this one doesn't. (Sorry for the poor quality pic)

Dypsis leptocheilos Culture
by gavilan1- 23 replies
- 1.8k views
I purchased this young teddy bear palm from a local nursery less than a month ago, but I didn't get a lot of culture information with it. Needless to say, I placed it in a partial sun location, receiving direct sun for the last three and a half hours before sunset, and occasional shots during the day through the nearby canopy. I kept the container medium moist, watering lightly once a day in the morning, along with occasional misting. A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that the new spear that it had when I bought it was not opening, and the tips of the leaves were drying out a few inches. Too much water? Too much sun? Too little water? Too little sun? Any help here i…

Interesting Finds At Local Nursery
by gavilan1- 7 replies

I stopped by the local nursery that supplies the area Home Depots to check on some coconuts that they had in stock, and was surprised to come across a couple of multiple Chamaedorea plumosa in large pots. I don't know where they get common names from, but they had these labeled as "Baby Queen Palms". Very nice and about 6' tall beyond the pot. Not bad, but $120. Perhaps a good deal, but not what I went in for. They had a nice selection of Chamaedorea sp. What really caught my eye was a 10' to 12' tall Veitchia merrilli in great shape that they had in a special area of their showroom. It had just arrived from Hawaii, and looked great. If I had $320 to burn, I might…

Nikau question
by Tyrone- 4 replies
- 1.1k views
Hi all, I've germinated some Rhopalostylis sapida and they're at sprout stage now. They've been at 22C, room temperature. I want to grow these as fast as possible, and was wondering if things would slow down if I potted them up and put them outside in the undercanopy. At present June has averaged 8C at night and 20C during the day. July will be 8C-18C approx. Would these grow quicker inside or would they just take to the outside conditions like a pig to mud. What do you reckon?? regards Tyrone

Palm butchers
by Daryl- 16 replies

Around these parts the electricity provider farms out all tree trimming to local contractors. So when they get too close to power lines they get the chop. The local contractor here really has a 'hatred' of palms as any palm within cooee of a power line gets trimmed back more than necessary. I have seen some real 'hack jobs' over the years on some really beautiful palms that were not even close to the lines. Today I saw yet another one...this coconut is near the local post office and used to be a really attractive specimen...I reckon it's time is limited as they will keep hacking it back... What happens in your local area...are the trimmers this bad? Daryl

Why don’t many people use MULCH? 1 2
by Utopia Palms- 49 replies
- 4.1k views
Hi All I have noticed through this forum in many of the photos listed that not many people use mulch, in places like Thailand and even more so in Indonesia there is no way they will even try this method of growing and planting palms or just about anything! It might be very hard to believe but we have never watered our main garden at all!! when the palms were planted many were one leaf seedlings into the full sun and just about every thing is growing in our limited rainfall, although we might be a little more lucky than most others through this drought but none of the palms or other plants look like they have been through a drought at all and all look great. What is th…

Planted three new Bismarckia seedlings out
by Fouquieria- 11 replies

Last year around this time I posted a pic of my very first Palm planted in the yard. It was a little extremely dark purple seedling Bismarckia. Well, I just recently planted out three more Bismarckia seedlings. The original one hasn't done much of anything. It does have a new spear that just seems to sit there and another baby spear at the base. It lost its deep purple and now is the typically more bland tan color. Since last summer, I also planted a Butia yatay and a little tiny Brahea decumbens...oh, I almost forgot and two little silver Serenoa repens. These last three Bismarckias I put in plastic sections of storm drain pipe to help retain the moisture. Th…
