Ah, late Spring.....
by quaman58- 13 replies

Hey all, This is probably the best time for plants around here. Not too hot for cool weather palms, but the warm weather palms begin to grow in earnest. Flowers, color, long days... A few pics from the garden.... A few of the more "common" species (whatever that means). Trachycarpus fortunei. Amazing how they look with water & fert. Butia capitata. Why they're not planted more often I have no idea. Phoenix roebellinii reaching the roof... Syagrus r. (Queen) growing at a good clip.

New spots for palms/cycads
by Walter John- 15 replies
Hi folks, Next week I will be removing some roses and taking them to a better home. This causes me immense joy as now I have two new spots for palms and perhaps a cycad or two. Here's the spots. Spot number one will get full sun all year round and spot number two gets morning to noon summer then is in shade and similar for winter with a tad winter afternoon sun. I have some thoughts but I would like to hear from everyone for some tips on what room is there for what palm species. I was thinking of a cycad or two for spot number 1. Let me hear from you please, it will help. SPOT ONE SPOT TWO

And the winner is...

The foxtail palm, (Wodyetia bifurcata) is probably the most planted palm in my area, now surpassing the queen palm. I see more of these used by municipalities, at HD and in new residential developments then any other palm. I'll take the quite 3/2 with the 2 oaks out front and the three foxtail around the front corner thank you (residential builders are so predicable). I love them none the less.

caryota use in landscape
by bjaworski- 14 replies
- 1.3k views
I am wondering if someone can help provide more information on caryota in the landscape. I live in Sunset Zone 24--coastal southern california. I have seen these palms thrive here. Here is my question: Do these palms all tend to have a life expectancy of about 30 years? I have read that when they send out their seed spike, they slowly die. If this is true for all the varieties in this genus (ochlanda, mitis, urens), I may decide against it. They get monstrously huge in my area and I don't want to deal with a dying giant in 30 years. Also, I have seen references made to caryota gigas. Is that yet another member of this genus? Thanks!

Signs of life

I posted some pics a couple months back of my Brahea edulis shortley after spring when I noticed some bad looking spears, they pulled right out. I soaked it numerous times with Peroxide and Liquid copper and Im glad to say its made a comeback. So its safe to say you do have a chance if the spears pull, I know I was really skeptical that it would make it. Spears that pulled Empty Center after spears pulled New life, first fronds were stunted but are now regaining size Close up

My 15 minutes of fame

I just did an interview last week about my trip to Madagascar. It was the first try on this type of format and I let myself be the guinea pig. I would not mind getting some feedback on the interview and see if you guys like it. I was asked to do another follow up with more info on the individual palms I saw on my trip, but not if you think this thing sucks. If you have 30 minutes to waste listening to me rant on about Madagascar, check it out on www.palmpedia.net and let me know what you think. Gary

After the much needed thunderstorm raced through and as the sun was peeking back out, I took a walk with camera in hand. I tried to take some unconventional photos, so some of you may have questions about species. Please email me if you do. As I really enjoy all of the private garden photographs, I thought I would return the favor. Enjoy! (Please excuse the humidity on the camera lens.) http://i168.photobucket.com/albums....024.jpg

Pink Rot
by LJG- 3 replies
OK, so I finally got it. I have a trunking Prestoea that was not looking good. I pulled off an old leaf base and notices a bunch of the pink. So I started feeling around the trunk. it is actually now a little mushy in an area the size of a half dollar. Of course I had to be an idiot and wanted to see if it was in the leaf base above so I pulled it off when it was not ready and exposed some green tissue. But it too had pink in the leaf base. I wondered how this could happened and found out a sprinkler was hitting the area daily. The water is no longer hitting it and I sprayed with fungicide, but my research online seems I should plan a palm funeral. Any advice or it is too…

Shade for Mother's day
by wendisplantation- 7 replies

Hi everyone- You have seen the pics of my seedling table....in dappled light, but as the sun gets higher, the table was getting more and more exposed. Well, Sunday my Steve and son Steven built me this little shade structure. It's not really where I wanted it, or constructed as I wanted, but who am I to complain? It seems to be working....Today is just the first day, so hopefully the table is in the right spot. Steve knows how to do so many different things, and aluminum work is one.....so, he got the aluminum for screen rooms, and instead of using screen, he put my shade cloth in it instead. There is still a seperate track so he can spline in another piece of shade cl…

Should pump out better than ever from here on. Here's junior in the front yard with two spears, young fella needs to learn from big mama down the back.

This my Jubaea, grown from a seed which came from Ecuador. It is about 5 years old. It has been in the ground for one year, and survived last Winter beautifully. Houston's humid climate and frequent rains, don't seem to bothere it, at least for now, knock on wood. This is the only survivor out of over a hundred Jubaeas I have attempted to grow. How long do I have to wait to see it develop a trunk? Ania

Hello everyone, i am a little worried about my large roeby that i just got. It seems to be sort of drying up??? Maybe from sunburn? transplant shock? or hopefully not Airpockets? CAn anyone help?? I got it from a member from another board....it was in his house for about 8 months in filtered sun through the windows. When i picked it up it was completely green and had no brown spots what so ever. It had to be taken out of the pot for removal and it was only out of the pot for a few hours. I planted it in the container it is in now a different pot...it lost a little dirt but most of the dirt that was in the original container made it back into the new container. I added 3…

Syagrus comosa seeds
by Patrick- 7 replies

Hi guys and gals I'm having THE hardest time getting my Syagrus comosa seeds to germinate! I tried a batch last year and I got one to sprout. It got a fungus, though, and didn't make it. I'm trying another batch this year and it's been 4 months and still nothing!! Am I being impatient? Should I be doing some cold stratification?? I've found that my Plectocoma himilayana doesn't want to sprout either and so that's why I'm entertaining the cold idea. Any suggestions are more than welcome. I just find it hard to believe that this species yeilds a 2.5% germination rate.... BTW, I'm using a 3-1 pearlite-peat mix with a heat mat at 90 deg F and high humidity. …
