P.sylvestris versus Avocado tree
by ChulaPalm- 24 replies
- 1.5k views
Hi again everyone, I was wondering if this will be wise...placing a P.sylvestris next to an Avocado tree. I have two of these bad boys and I want to create a balanced look on my slope (opposite ends with P. sylvestris). Figure I could trim the P.sylvestris in the future to give the Avocado tree some room. The P.sylvestris is not a space hog like P.canariensis...right? Here is a pic Thanks for any comments, Sean

Transplanting Sabal uresana
by merrill- 1 reply

Has anyone had experience transplanting Sabal uresana from the ground at good size but before a well-formed trunk? It is generally thought this stage is much too early for, e. g., S. palmetto. ANY info will be gratefully received. Best Wishes, merrill

The uncommon palms
by FossilNypa- 13 replies

There are a lot of palms that aren't talked about. I was browsing a site from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and found a palm with a very large and amazing fruit, Wettinia quinaria. Here is the link (scroll down to see the photos). I now imagine how much amazing palms await to be seen!

Metal banding on palms
by TikiRick- 6 replies
- 5.3k views
I have noticed more and more metal bands on the trunks of palms. These metal bands are about a foot wide and are usually about 4 -5' above the surface of the ground. I see this particulary on palms that are planted in public places. Is this to keep rodents from getting into the crown/seed? To keep insects from crawling up the trunk? Is this just a Florida thing, borrowed perhaps, from the Caribbean islands or Latin America?

coconut betel
by fiji jim- 7 replies
This is a small one about 1.5 inch. Check his horn. I have seen this betel up to 4 inches long. If you are unluckey enough to be bittin by one, you will remember it for a long time. We are not copra farmers but at times it does quiet some damage to our palms. Seems to prefer to attack our coconut palms firstly and then likes Bismarck and Triangles. They are really hard to eradicate as they live in the palm tops and breed in fallen trunks and compost piles. They can kill a coconut palm if they attack at the base of the new spear.

by Logolight- 2 replies
As I look at palms from day to day I notice that many different species of palm seeds ripen at different times of the year. So does anyone know where I may find any information to reference that lists what time of the year each palm species' seeds are ripe and ready to be picked? Thanks. Dave

A bush trek in Fiji

This hike was at the eastern end of the island of Vanua Levu. It is only about 60 klm. from our home but for most of the journey the roads only allow the 4WD to go at about 30 klm. per hour on old logging roads and then the hiking is all up and then down back to the wheels. This first pic is Veitchia joannis high on a ridge above Nakobo village before we arrived at the area where we started on foot.

Home Depot Blue Light Special

Had my eye on two Phoenix rupicolas at the Home Depot on Sports Arena. They were in 20" boxes with an original asking price of 575 each. Apparently someone with a large house did a special order with Home Depot and the palms were sourced from Rancho Soledad nursery. It turns out that the owner for some reason did not take delivery of the palms and so they sat there. Well after six weeks of neglect they starting to look like they were headed toward tough times. I went by Home Depot today and they agreed to take $250 for both. They have to be at least fifteen years from seed. Here is a shot of them in my truck.

germinating chembeyronia seed
by ViveroLaVida- 8 replies

Hello all, just got some chambeyronia seed (thanks christian). I need some advice as to germination. How deep does the container need to be? They have been cleaned but I noticed that i can still crack it and remove a husk, Should I ?(kinda like pseudophoenix) Should they be started in individual containers or can I community pot them? And last but not least what kinda temps do they like for germination. Hot Hot like a Bismarkia or Hot like Dypsis or medium hot like Caryota ? Thanks Oscar

Germination
by bgl- 36 replies

One piece of information that rarely seems to be discussed in detail is the length of time for germination of different palm species. I realize this partly depends on your method. For instance, I don't use any bottom heat, so most seeds probably take a little bit longer that way. Still, if seeds from a particular palm are likely to take 12 months to germinate, this is obviously very useful information, so that you don't begin to get disappointed after 2-3 months! (which seems to be normal for most seeds - without bottom heat). I started thinking about this yesterday because I was given some Carpoxylon macrospermum seeds last month. They came from Pauleen Sullivan's tree…

Trouble with Dypsis Leptocheilos seeds
by Palm Guy- 5 replies
- 1.1k views
Hi all, I ordered about 20 Dypsis Leptocheilos seeds. Im growing them in peat/vermiculite mix in plastic baggies covered in darkness. So far its been nearly two months and not one seed has germinated. Any suggestions as to water or heat requirements. Soil is just moist enough to squeeze a few drops and its sitting outside in about 80F heat. I've heard of these seeds sprouting in two weeks so I'm wondering if I did something wrong. Seeds were fresh when purchased. Many thanks, Mike F

Cutting Flower Bracts off palm
by epicure3- 6 replies
Ok, so I planted a chamaedorea tepijilote a couple of years ago and did so in a very poor place. The palm is subjected to way too much wind and full sun. It started out with 4 fronds a couple of years ago. Then, at the end of last year it had 3.....not I'm down to 2. The wind just tatters up the fronds. Unfortunately, I have no where else to put it....so it's staying put for now. The wind is the real damage....much more than the sun. Anyways, this thing flowers and seeds like crazy. If I cut off the bracts, will the speed of frond growth increase? I'd like to get a few more on this thing before it's a stick. Thanks for any advice.

While cutting through a neighborhood, I came across a large stand of Roystoneas. That in itself, not that uncommon here in South Florida, but this old curved Roystonea certainly was. I can't remember seeing a curved Royal, much like the Coconuts will curve.

I have a juvenile Syagrus orinocensis in the ground and it appears to be quite happy. However, I do note that it appears to be weak rooted. Does anyone have any more information about this palm?
