Im moving a couple of large queen palms, please help with any suggestions, they are about 13' tall, about 11' of gray trunk abour 24" around , mature trees, we are hand digging. How much root ball should I leave? Ive been told the roots die back if cut so getting a large root ball is not needed, what would you expext a tree like that to weigh? could three people lift it?What should I do to get it going in its new home? Thanks in advance

Separating the men from the boys, ah, to be politically correct, the palmophiles from the true palmnuts, just how many Genus are represented in your PRIVATE collection.

For the Birds -- Palm Parts that is

Howdyall: The thread on the disappearing labels reminded me of the time I saw a hummingbird repeatedly dive-bombing at my Dypsis decaryi and leptocheilos. They love to use that fuzz to line their nests. We also had a wierdo weaverbird who used fronds and fuzz in its nest. And, a hummingbird built its teensy little cup of a nest on what is now a dead queen palm frond. Pictures at eleven . . . . How about the rest of you? Dave

Areca vestiaria 'maroon'
by Trópico- 9 replies
- 1.4k views
I recently germinated a batch of A. vestiaria 'maroon' from RPS. All of them except one are displaying a beautiful greenish leaf with reddish borders: Question: is this one NOT going to be 'maroon' leaf? The last one, on the other hand, seems to be way slower than the rest, its plumules are bright red as opposed to a mute brown, and is forming this weird knee.

Hello all, New to this forum and new to growing palms - finally moved to an area and settled where I can grow them!! I will be taking a trip to Guam in Aug. and was wondering if anyone knows of any tropical gardens/nurseries that I might be able to visit and/or possibly purchase seeds from. Any palms unique to the island? Any other plant suggestions for my visit? Thanks for any replies. Cheers, Kirk

Pinanga riparia?

I bought this palm even though I couldn;t really find much info about it. Does anyone have a photo of a mature palm? It seems pretty fast growing. How tall will it get, and will the fronds get longer as it matures and provide a bit of shade, or will it always be kind of spare in its growth habit?

I have been perusing Home Depot again... All the construction of the shadehouse has put me in Home Depot way more than I'd like to admit... Tonight I just ended up there for a dimmer switch for a new light fixture and ended up buying fertilizer and an item labelled "Tropical Foliage" It was marked down to $4.99 so I just couldn't resist... I have seem alot of Siphokentia beguinii var. broadleaf floating around that store lately and think I may have picked up a younger specimen? Can anyone help me to identify what I have purchased? Base Detail

Where to plant Dypsis carlsmithii?
by Dave-Vero- 7 replies
The cute little impulse purchase (grown by Searle Brothers) will need plenty of space. It can fit: --in the front yard, where it would be on a well-drained mound with lots of space under high laurel oaks (which are quite likely to be removed in the next decade, anyway). --back yard, under high canopy of a neighbor's laurel oak. Relatively moist site in a modest swale. --full sun in the back (sort of the last available spot of the sort). Not as if I don't have other stuff to install, including an unknown Dypsis that looks to be a good companion in the Archontophoenix-Carpentaria bed (with lots of heliconias, too).

Humus based soils
by Logolight- 3 replies
In reading the good book of Cultivated Palms, the authors mention that alot of palms like a humus rich and well draining soil. So in my endeavours to find such a soil I searched at HD and Lowe's and found nothing that matches the description. However, I did find a humus/pete soil mix at Wal-Mart. But when I opened the bag the mix was a thick mud, too thick for palm roots to survive in such a dense medium. So my question is where can I find a humus based and well draining soil all in one? Jeff? Joseph? Any ideas? Thanks Dave

Fungus Gnats!
by Jerry@TreeZoo- 4 replies
When Don K was in Floriduh, he was kind enough to share some smuggled seeds wif me. I put them in community pots in my garage to keep the squirrels and rats out of them. They are germinating now but have those little gnats flying around them. The soil in the pots is regular potting soil below with an inch or two of zeolite (a volcanic mineral similar in looks to perlite but heavier) on top. I have never really set up for seeds so although I have been growing palms for decades, I rarely went the seed route. What do I do? Tanx, Jerry

I observed that a plant vendor here always put charcoal in his potting medium for epiphytes and he claims that it has some "disinfectant qualities". He claims that he generally has less problems with fungus or bacterial attacks on his orchids or newly top cut aroids Is there any truth in this? I have been adding fine charcoal chips and charcoaled rice husks to my soil mix. At any rate they loosen up the mix very well but I am wondering if it is also blocking out fungal attacks.

Well, I hope this works OK. Different browsers may display it differently. And depending on how you have your browser set for image display, it will also make a difference. But as they say, "Nothing ventured, nothing gained." If it is working right, you will need to scroll from side to side.

Tropical Vibe Garden Tour & Free BBQ
by Johnny- 5 replies
Tropical Gardening Enthusiasts, The Tropical Vibe Garden Tour and Free BBQ will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2007 at 9:00 am. We will be touring four palm gardens in Huntington Beach then enjoying a free BBQ at the nursery. This will be a great time to see some rare mature palms, steal some great landscaping ideas, see friends from this board, and eat some good grub - as usual. Huntington Beach is centrally located between SD and LA and an easy morning drive from the IE. I want to invite our friends north of LA to join us as well. For that matter, all of our friends in NV and AZ should come out, too, and enjoy our cooler weather for the weekend. It's a good reason to …

Houston has been soaking wet recently. It rains everyday, and walking on the lawn is like stepping on a wet sponge. How worried should I be about Brahea and other moisture hating palms? Is there any way to protect them somehow? Ania

Which palms would you plant in this front yard?
by junglegalfla- 29 replies
- 2.2k views
My front yard is pretty void of palms. All I have out there are some dypsis lutescens and a couple cardboards. I posted some pics in #6 & 7 posts of the front yard here http://palmtalk.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboar...t=ST;f=4;t=6294 What do you think would look good? I am going to take out the bouganvilla. It's a monster to upkeep. The only thing I really want to keep is my oldhami boo. This gets full morning sun facing east & filtered afternoon sun. I thought about a bizzie but I am afraid the color of the fronds would clash with my house. ???

Fertilizing with drip irrigation filter?
by doubravsky- 5 replies
I'm about halfway through converting all of my sprinklers to drip irrigation using Raindrip products. Today on my 5 millionth trip to Lowes for that one thing I forgot, I noticed the fertilizer pellets you can put in your filter. They recommend 1 pellet per emitter, which is a lot of pellets to buy at $10 for 30 pellets Is anyone using the drip filter to fertilize? Do you use something other than the Raindrip pellets? How well does it work? Is there a cheaper source for the pellets? Any advice or experience you can share will be much appreciated.
