by metalfan- 2 replies

I bought this one in Nov 06 as well. Iguanura piahensis. Supposed to be newly described in 1996 (well, that's 11 years ago now!) Its from the Malay Rainforest and that's ALL I know about it. It seems to like my growing conditions though as it has put out 2 new fronds

Palms from my nursery: Dypsis lanceolata
by metalfan- 4 replies

I feel very out of my league here, as I know that many of you have lovely mature specimens of palms that I will probably never have. But, I am trying! I want to post a few of mine at a time, so that I can get the full benefit of all of your tips, comments, critiques, and experiences with some of these. First please let me make clear: I have never germinated palm seeds. Someone gave me some assorted seeds once in a trade and I tried to get them to go, but not a single seed out of maybe 50 germinated All the plants I have I either bought, traded for, or they were gifts. When i was researching ralms to decide what to buy, my criteria was mainly 2 things: was it RARE, …

Dypsis minuta

Believe it or not these 2 tiny palms have actually grown in the months I have had them. The larger one has put on 2 fronds, the smaller one 1 frond. They are still only about 2 inches tall but at least they have more fronds!! Supposedly they will top out at about 20 inches.

although I didn't lose any palms to the freeze we had in Janurary I did have some of my palms suffer leaf burn, some worse than others. Every day when I walk out and see the damaged ones I'm reminded of the event. When my C gigas opened up its first post freeze leaf it helps put the memories behind. I'm sure all the other so calians felt similarly as new growth opened up. The new leaf that opened up is about 12' long including the petiole. Just thought I'd share. another view with surrounding area included A view from the other side

Odd palm stories
by Trópico- 2 replies

Well it turns out I am trying to germinate four more supermarket coconuts. This time I am not being so lucky as I was last year. I left them in almost full sun, under a screen porch on Sunday. Sometime in mid afternoon, as I was painting one of my rooms I hear a loud noise coming from the back of the house as if someone was in there and kicked something. I did not pay any more attention. Two hours or so later I see my dog licking the insides of one of the coconuts and I wondered how she took it from the pot and split it apart. After some thinking I realized the coconut EXPLODED with the heat of the sun and split into two and both sections flew away from the pot!

Instead of the bag method I placed my Coccothrinax Borhidiana seeds in a transparent tupprware like container. The container is only about 3 inches high so the cocopeat is just around 2 inches deep. its been about a month and I noticed that 2 roots have reached the bottom of the containers but nothing has sprouted up on top yet. There are 10 seeds so I hope the others are also sprouting already. I am tempted to pot them individually already but is this the right time? Should I wait for a leaf to push up from the peat? What potting medium should I use for the seedlings?

Caryota zebrina
by XYZ- 9 replies

Greetings: In recent postings, members have commented on how slow they find this species is in cultivation, and how most individuals hold only three or so leaves at a time. I was at a friend's commercial greenhouse down on the southwestern Pacific foothills of Guatemala this past weekend, and he had a batch of about 50 C. zebrina that were really phenomenal-looking. Largest seedling in the pic is about 50 cm (20") tall with 5-6 leaves, but these things are only about 18 mos old from seed (ex-RPS). Interestingly enough, he has a similar-sized batch of C. ophiopellis that was imported at the same time that are about one-third this size. I would have thought that the l…

What did this to my Hillebrandii??
by metalfan- 9 replies
I have 2 Pritchardias...hillebrandii and pacifica. This winter, both had this "spotty" condition occur. Both were kept in the greenhouse (this one is planted in the ground, the pacifica is smaller and is containerized). None of my other palms of any type had this happen to them. The new frond that is coming out in this photo appears to be free of this spotting condition; likewise, the new growth on the pacifica is also without the spots. What caused it and how can I avoid it in the future?

Howdyall: The thread on the disappearing labels reminded me of the time I saw a hummingbird repeatedly dive-bombing at my Dypsis decaryi and leptocheilos. They love to use that fuzz to line their nests. We also had a wierdo weaverbird who used fronds and fuzz in its nest. And, a hummingbird built its teensy little cup of a nest on what is now a dead queen palm frond. Pictures at eleven . . . . How about the rest of you? Dave

Areca vestiaria 'maroon'
by Trópico- 9 replies
- 1.4k views
I recently germinated a batch of A. vestiaria 'maroon' from RPS. All of them except one are displaying a beautiful greenish leaf with reddish borders: Question: is this one NOT going to be 'maroon' leaf? The last one, on the other hand, seems to be way slower than the rest, its plumules are bright red as opposed to a mute brown, and is forming this weird knee.

I will be taking a trip to Guam in Aug. and was wondering if anyone knows of any tropical gardens/nurseries that I might be able to visit and/or possibly purchase seeds from. Pinanga riparia?
by metalfan- 3 replies

I bought this palm even though I couldn;t really find much info about it. Does anyone have a photo of a mature palm? It seems pretty fast growing. How tall will it get, and will the fronds get longer as it matures and provide a bit of shade, or will it always be kind of spare in its growth habit?

Tonight I just ended up there for a dimmer switch for a new light fixture and ended up buying fertilizer and an item labelled "Tropical Foliage" It was marked down to $4.99 so I just couldn't resist... I have seem alot of Siphokentia beguinii var. broadleaf floating around that store lately and think I may have picked up a younger specimen? Can anyone help me to identify what I have purchased? Base Detail

Where to plant Dypsis carlsmithii?
by Dave-Vero- 7 replies
The cute little impulse purchase (grown by Searle Brothers) will need plenty of space. It can fit: --in the front yard, where it would be on a well-drained mound with lots of space under high laurel oaks (which are quite likely to be removed in the next decade, anyway). --back yard, under high canopy of a neighbor's laurel oak. Relatively moist site in a modest swale. --full sun in the back (sort of the last available spot of the sort). Not as if I don't have other stuff to install, including an unknown Dypsis that looks to be a good companion in the Archontophoenix-Carpentaria bed (with lots of heliconias, too).

Humus based soils
by Logolight- 3 replies
In reading the good book of Cultivated Palms, the authors mention that alot of palms like a humus rich and well draining soil. So in my endeavours to find such a soil I searched at HD and Lowe's and found nothing that matches the description. However, I did find a humus/pete soil mix at Wal-Mart. But when I opened the bag the mix was a thick mud, too thick for palm roots to survive in such a dense medium. So my question is where can I find a humus based and well draining soil all in one? Jeff? Joseph? Any ideas? Thanks Dave

I was tempted to knock on the door and ask to collect the seeds over the next month or so... Maybe they will be real nice let me bag the infructesence! ???
