@Bill H2DB If you're down in the Sarasota area sometime, or don't mind making the drive I can confirm that "Your Farm and Garden" nursery on Beneva Rd in Sarasota has them. I just dropped by a few weeks ago and they had a bunch of them in stock. They are definitely the dwarf variety too, although they're pretty expensive. I believe it was $150 for a 3 gallon. Other than that, the link provided above might point you to a dealer closer to your area for them.

@happypalms and @Jim in Los Altos with your cat palms trunking, how tall are they overall now? I planted some a couple years ago and they're getting up to ~7' now. I was actually hoping they'd get taller, so I'm curious how tall they get when they're 15-20 years old.

Brahea edulis, or the Guadalupe palm, is a slow-growing, hardy palm native to Mexico's Guadalupe Island, known for its large, fan-shaped, green leaves and edible black fruit. It's highly tolerant of drought, wind, and poor soils, making it a popular ornamental plant in warm climates, though it's considered rare in the wild due to habitat threats like feral goats. This self-cleaning palm grows to about 30-45 feet tall and is suitable for full sun and well-drained soil.

I find them popping up more than 10 feet away from the mother plant well beyond mowing lanes and of course around the plant they pop-up like crazy.

Nicely grown one there Tracy. Seems like near the coast, they don't suffer much brown tipping. Mine is going nowhere fast fortunately. Probably 15 years old & still has held onto all its leaf bases. Looks like a giant fern at this point, as does yours.

Saludos.

Hello! Newbie to the forum here looking for help. We recently moved into a house with very beautiful two date palms (about 20 feet tall) that have started to have brown at the fronds earlier this spring. The browning has accelerated and I'm desperate for help in keeping these beautiful babies alive. We have neglected to water them and have recently done so (after we noticed the browning) for about 30 mins once a week on a slow flow rate. The palms were planted in 2024 by the old owners as part of a backyard remodel. We are in Orange in Southern California. Any help in assisting with this problem would be immensely helpful. Thank you in advance!

Interesting I never give mine any supplemental water and they go through extended dry spells, and hang in there.

Did you ever pull the trigger and grow one? They get big over time. I am in a different climate zone but do have experience growing a couple of Caryota species including gigas now lumped in as obtusa. I would not underestimate the project it will be to remove it someday. The one I acquired as gigas is well over 20 years old. The trunk is massive in diameter but it hasn't gained the height of some around town in Encinitas and adjacent communities.

My first impression with the 20-25 jubaeas in containers and hybrids Ive seen is that it looks like JxB, the jubaea mother. These are great hybrids if they can be happy, and they grow much faster than jubaea. If its a pure jube, I haven't seen one like that in my limited experience. Its surely not a J x B which tend to be much more recurved in the petiole. It also doesnt look like any pure butia species I have seen.

I grounded the Jubaeopsis that germinated May 2024, so two years old now. I left the potted palms out in the weather last winter because there weren’t any freezes but they all developed fungus from too much moisture so I brought them in and treated with hydrogen peroxide for a couple weeks. You can still see the damage.

Coastal pasco in the big freeze was anywhere from at freezing on the coast to just below for the windy event, but the cold starts inland from the developed areas during the radiational cold. Its all about location here, not far from me the crownshaft palms are all fine, mine took heavy damage the second night at 24, but i had 12 freezes, while the coast a few miles southwest had just the one- and not far below freezing. Triangles do well as do the other tougher ones but its a hard grow for most.
