A lovely native palm that nobody grows here

I also have one that was given to me as a Veitchia. Oh well, it's doing all right. The crown is kinda skimpy on mine. -
The palm grower’s enemy is back
sonoranfans replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
This evening it flew in at dusk again and this time it was very verbal, hooting every 3=4 seconds and double hoots. I dont know why but suddenly very verbal just after sundown. Looks like its ~2 long with a 4' wingspan. Our cat doesnt like to be out there at night. THere must be a lot of prey here because we also have a lot of red shouldered hawks hunting during daytime. I hear their cries sounding like wounded animal as they soar overhead. There are rabbits and squirrels in the area for both the owls and hawks to eat. -
When I posted my C. Decaryi a while ago , I was told they struggle and usually fail in the humid Hawaii climate. It is arid here most of the year and mine are 25 years old or so , doing well. Nice , nonetheless. Some very nice palms in your collection. They all look very nice , hopefully the Triangle will pull through. Harry

I told Erica about them as she has a rat problem too. She did a bit of research and found a lot of people have problems with the gas cylinder thingies leaking. What do people with them have to say ? Mopoke owls can be heard here at night and I have seen a few Tawny Frogmouths around (not officially an owl though) Peachy -

Jubaea Chilensis x Butia sp. F2 seeds compared to Jubaea Chilensis seeds
Enar posted a topic in COLD HARDY PALMS
Hybrid Jubaea x Butia F2 seeds compared to Jubaea Chilensis seeds. Right away the hybrid has a darker seed appearance than both Butia odorata and the Jubaea seeds. They look a lot like Butia Witeckii seeds except rounder in shape! But about the same size aa Witeckii seeds otherwise. They are a little smaller than the Jubaea seeds. Hopefully they will sprout and survive the wet cold. I currently have two Jubaea seedlings that survived brief 25F so far. Pindos do very well here with rarely any damage.-

A few more photos of my palms. The first is Coccothrinax crinita sp. brevicinis Dictyosperma album Ravenea hildebrandii in the middle of a few Encephalartos Here’s an unknown Dypsis with a Wodyetia and A alexandrae in the back ground Arenga hookeriana clump. It’s hard to keep these looking good here. A clump of Hydriastele rostrata (?) The moon raising over C. decaryi. I just noticed the new fronds look bad. Not sure what’s going on but hopefully it recovers. I’ve already lost 2 of these. Moquitos are coming out. I’ll continue posting a few more photos in the morning.

Its been a while since I've posted anything, and figured I'd step it up and document the life of a copernicia fallaensis in my front yard. Here's when I first got it. It was all alone and looking for a forever home. Grown by Josh Allen at his Vista nursery, it was ready to move out and make a life of its own. Hitchhiked it's way to my house in Fresno back in May. Life's been good to it so far. A good, deep, sandy loam (some 80% sand), a warm climate (many days above 100F) and plenty of water. Some cool, though spiky, neighbors as well. No tantrums yet, though we've been enveloped in a thick fog for the better part of 2 weeks. Seems to not mind the chill.

Looking for a Archontophoenix Cunninghamiana in Central Florida
musaflorida posted a topic in Palms/Plants/Seeds Wanted
Also known as Bangalow palm, king palm, Illawarra palm or piccabeen palm. They seem to be super hard to find, I found a couple Etsy listings for seeds but would prefer a live plant. Im far too impatient lol. Im in the Orlando Metro Area (Zone 10A). Please let me know if you, someone you know or a reputable place that has any/will get some soon Thank you!! -
Just looking at this thread again, was looking at mine this morning and thought I’d post an update. Tim

Well, all the hype for a horrific polar vortex was just that, hype. We did however, switch from October to January as we passed Thanks giving.

They took about 3 months in a community pot before the first spear started to show.

I have some nice, blue Sabal uresana available for shipping within the US. They are in liners and busting out of the bottom. I have 10 available - some have multiple plants in them and you could separate them if you wish, but i would prefer to ship these potted to avoid bare-rooting at this time of year. $20 each for these + shipping from Fresno. Cheers! 🤙🏽

How long was the germination period ? I obtained very fresh seed several months ago, but no results so far. I do use bottom heat and my greenhouse temperature is 50-80F. Thanks

All this is not right Richard, one goes out of his way to run a nursery, and what do they do, so they encourage it to close, thus increasing unemployment, I don't know about you in Australia, but here unemployment is very high -

Both things. They are very good to cover walls and they have more chances to live after a freeze than a solitary species. Most crownshafted, solitary palms are a no go here. -

Oh I don’t mind clumping palms, and if they live after a bad freeze even better! A bit of humour as peachys loathes clumping palms, but secretly I will find a clumping palm that will one day appease the gods and @peachy will love that palm like one her pooches. But for the life of me I can’t figure out why my clumping palms a mysteriously dying, I reckon peachys has been around with that roundup in that little spray bottle that she claims to her defence against clumping palms ! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 -

I don't think that @idontknowhatnametuse prefers the look of clumping palms (maybe he does?) but rather prefers to grow a clumper that is marginal in his climate. If he gets a bad freeze event that kills the main trunk the palm can continue to live from the suckers growing from the base.
