On the pic above, the one with the white sand, you can see in the distance a tree covered with an orange climber. That climber is a parasite that will eventually kill its host! It grows all over madagascar, even on the sand beaches full of salt.

I don't know the region well enough of course, but I wonder with all that water if there is a Ravenea musicaulis in there somewhere..

Thanks again to you Bruno, I love any news from Madagascar.

There also a few poor blokes like those hyphaene coriacea.
And a climber that has seeds half black, half red. When i was a kid we used to collect them, they grow all over the island.
These are the last pics of Makay till the next expedition, maybe next november.

thanks to have shown us great photos of plants in their natural habitat, in this part of the country still untouched...

Here is one of the inhabitants of the Makay. There are two varieties of lemurs.

Just a note on that red and black seeded climber:

It's native to Indonesia-common name is Rosary Pea...Abrus precatorius. These seeds are commonly strung to make necklaces. I saw them growing all over Madagascar.

The seeds contain Albrin, a poison that's more deadly than Ricin. Here's what can happen if you chew up a few...

"If ingested -- and the seed coating is broken -- rosary pea seeds cause severe nausea and vomiting, which eventually leads to dehydration, and ends with the kidneys, liver and spleen shutting down. Death usually follows within three to four days."

Yep, rosary pea grows all over the place here too. It takes less than 3 μg of their poison to kill a human. There are also other varieties besides the red/black like pure black, pure white and green.
