I decided to post a few photos of our trip to Rio last year as a teaser to the upcoming event.

I've just noticed, from Bo's post in another thread, that many reservations were made in the last few days and that the IPS is contacting the hotel in Rio in order to book a few extra rooms, so I guess a great participation is expected this time.

We'll also be attending the post tour to Minas Gerais and São Paulo, guided by Prof. Harri Lorenzi, and I was wondering what other members of Palmtalk are planning to come for this Biennial and the pre or post tours that will have more people participating, in April.

Here are some pictures taken during our last trip to Rio, in June 2008:

Here's a touristic map, borrowed from the internet, with an approximate description of the City surroundings.

The beaches, starting from left to right are: Barra da Tijuca (where the hotel of the Biennial is located), São Conrado, Ipanema, Copacabana, Urca, Botafogo, Flamengo and Glória, and then comes the Airport Santos Dumont, used for domestic flights.

The big lake behind Ipanema is called Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas...and notice the Botanic Gardens (Jardim Botânico), located right behind the Jockey Club, near the Tijuca forest by the mount Corcovado, with the statue of Christ:

Thanks for starting this thread, and thanks for the great photos. Lots of people are looking forward to this very special Biennial in one of the most beautiful cities on the planet! I will obviously be attending, with my wife Karolyn. We'll be arriving in the morning of 16 April (so that I can attend the Board meeting on Saturday, 17 April).

We closed early registration on 15 December, just a few days ago, and the numbers are still being added up, but apparently we're up to just over 140 IPS members signed up as of right now. Exactly two years ago, we also closed early registration for Costa Rica on 15 Dec (2007), and had 136 at that time, two years ago. So, we are actually ahead of the Costa Rica numbers. This is surprising because the Rio registration fee is somewhat higher than CR and airline fares for just about everybody to get to Rio will be more expensive as well. Add to this the general worldwide financial situation, which is worse today than it was two years ago, and the bottom line is that the IPS Board is extremely pleased about the support and level of participation for the Rio Biennial. Incidentally, we ended up with just over 180 participants in Costa Rica. Registration for Rio is still open, but at the somewhat higher, "standard" rate. Registration WILL close no later than 10 Feb 2010, so anyone who is seriously thinking of going needs to sign up soon. One other very important factor to keep in mind is that because of logistics, registration will close if and when we reach 200 participants (maximum of 4 buses with 50 seats in each). If this number is reached before 10 Feb 2010, then that's it!

I can't wait, having wanted to go to Brazil for many years. Also, I'm looking forward to meeting some new palm friends and seeing old friends too.

A friend in Rio (through my aviation contacts) sent me this photo, showing the location of the Rio Botanical Garden. Looks like an interesting and very scenic location (but I guess that can be said of the entire city of Rio!).
