Prestoea acuminata var. montana in habitat, Puerto Rico.

I've been 4 times to Puerto Rico and sure enough, I've visited the magnificent El Yunque rainforest, situated on the mountain that goes by the same name. As many of you probably know, it's an extremely humid, rainy and shady forest, considerably cooler than the coastal Puerto Rico (in el Yunque you may feel cool and sweaty at the same time!), and it's home to prestoea acuminata palm, which is literally abudant in the lower and middle elevations of the mountain. My last visit was on August, 2009 and from the many pictures I took I'd like to share with you the nicer ones.

Thanks for posting! I also like the curved individual :mrlooney: These should do well in South Florida.

Thanks guys. I also love the curved ones...I don't know why they grow this way but I suspect they went down by one of the many hurricanes that hit El Yunque and kept growing from there.

Thanks for these pictures. You don't often see pics of this species. I've got a few seedlings I've just potted on and put into my shadehouse. I'm glad they like cool humid conditions.

Best regards

Thanks so much for the photos. I visited Puerto Rico and the rainforest 4 times in just 2 years, but unfortunately it was before I had the Palm Fever! I would definitely appreciate it much more now.

Thanks for the photos. This is a very nice palm. It is growing well in Sth East Queensland.

Tyrone, you mentioned you had seedlings. I just ordered from RPS some seed of this. Did you grow yours from seed.

If so how easy did they germinate. Any tips you could pass on would be appreciated.

Regards

Brod

Hi Brod,

Dont worry about germination at all,i am 99% sure your seeds will all come at an advanced stage of germination as mine did twice when i ordered this species. Its keeping them alive that is difficult...

Easy to germinate Brod. Mine weren't even from the new list. Just give them the usual treatment and they'll be up in 4 to 8 weeks. They're fast growers too. I got my seed a year ago and I just potted them up from the com pot. They were on their 3rd leaf mostly. Keep them moist and humid but in free draining soil.

Best regards
