Please join us for our first meeting of the year on Sunday, May 24th from 1:00 to 5:00 PM. at the Mill Valley garden of the late Don Worth. Mr. Bob Navaros, Don’s partner, has invited us to celebrate Don's extraordinary botanical achievement in this decades old garden. This garden is an unique composition in a splendid and harmonious setting.

Don was a long-time member of the Northern California Palm Society, a musician, and a renowned photographer. He had worked with and for Ansel Adams. Many of his photography subjects came from his garden.

An avid gardener, he amassed an extraordinary collection of over 40 species of palms, ferns, agaves, succulents, Cacti, Bromeliads and Tillandsias. His artistic approach inspired countless visitors: He was always so willing to share his expertise, knowledge and experience. Don can also be credited with the creation of many hybrid succulents.

We last visited Don's garden in 2004. We will start with a pot-luck lunch at 1:00, followed by an auction.

This street is narrow, with extremely limited street parking. The closest ample parking is several city blocks away down a steep hill. We strongly urge you to car-pool with other members!

Don Hodel was in attendance

I'm certain others were there as well, I know so few.....

The coning cycads were very impressive.

A handout was supplied discussiong the history of the garden, but I believe that posting it may be a plagaristic activity.

I'll leave it to others.....

Just got home from my bay area trip. Another great garden, thanks to Bob for hosting it and whomever for arranged the location. Haven't gone through our pictures yet. BTW, did anyone take pictures of the georgous Bromeliads and Cycads that were in the house and/or have identifications for them?

The only other forum member that I recognized was Daxin.

Ooo!! I want to see his yard! What part of Mill Valley is it in? I grew up in Corte Madera. My parents still have their house there and I always wish I could plant things in it. Alas, it's far away and I'm never in the bay area for long enough! What's the first palm in Post #5? Laccospadix?

I'm always up for learning new things!

Yes,Kyle, the first photo in Bepah's post # 5 (post # 7 of this thread) is a single trunk form of Laccospadix. To the left edge of this same photo is a suckering, multi-trunk form of Laccospadix. This garden is on the east facing hillside above the high school.

Thank you Darold! I was totally stumped with that palm. Do you know if Don or Bob have an account on here? I'd like to get in touch with them since I'm sure we have similar climates! I used to have track meets at Tamalpais High School. How is your Cyphophoenix doing, by the way?

I'm always up for learning new things!

I have never read this sub-forum before, so here are some of my very late non-palm photos from that meeting:

Dioons inside. I am amazed at how small the pots are.

Biggest Cyathea medullaris in the Bay Area? I heard Strybing lost a big one in a storm many years ago.

Our group from above. I was very late for the meeting since the Memorial Day traffic was horrible. It took me an hour to get through SF.
