I'm planning on being there...why bump for being less than two weeks? Was I supposed to make previous reservations??

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but I think by "bump" Ray means move the post to the top to remind people because the event is getting closer.

Ray, I'm sorry to hear of your bad luck. We made it just in time due to an emergency stop at my favorite Vietnamese restaurant for lunch. Dr. Hodel covered a number of Chamaedoreas that have been described or renamed (mostly by him) since his book on the genus was published, (including one that grows by long rhizomes - how cool is that?!)

It was a really good presentation and nice photos. I really liked the C. piscifolia.

great minds think alike, the piscifolia was my favorite too, and not just cuz I'm a pisces. I can't find one friggin pic of it anywhere; for those who don't know, it is one of the bifid leaved Chams but at the end of each segment is a protruding piece of foliage not unlike an actual fish's tail. Very kool... his presentation was fantastic, not sure where we would see pics of those palms again.

Hodel toured my place afterwards, what a personable person he is. We were able to discuss the growth rates of certain things here like Bismarckia & Washingtonia vs out west, , ID a previously unknown (to me) Cham., and flowers on a Hyphaene, and observe an Allagoptera branch (I have an arenaria where one of the stems has split the ensuing frond also bifurcated)! Never seen this before. I don't have many Chams at my place (blamed on lack of shade earlier) but I can't do that anymore. Will have to get busy with them now. The funny thing is he & his asst were more interested in the thorough coating of graphiola false smut that engulfs a P.canariensis, maybe more than any palm I showed them...

I agree about getting to see some extraordinary photos. It was a really nice day to be in Orlando. Thanks to everyone who had a hand in this event. The little Chamaedoreas in my yard look all the better now.

Leu was looking great, as usual, and the humidity was low enough to make it comfortable. Among all the wonderful palms, cycads, and unusual stuff it was wonderful to see the pair of giant crape myrtles ("Muskogee"?) in flower. With all the myrtle mutilation going on, you rarely see big, well-formed ones in their glory.

Got to see the freshly planted sabal palmettos hiding the billboard. Wonderful. Not to mention a nice Caryota in someone's yard straight ahead of the Mead Garden entrance.

Well, I don't have a pic of Ray changing his tire on I-4 :( - but I do have one of Don speaking to the crowd.

Ray, we missed you - sorry about your flat tire. It was a great presentation. Don covered all of the changes in Chamaedorea since his book - new discoveries as well as nomenclature changes. If you attended the talk and would like to have a record of what Don covered, he wrote an article in the subject which appears in the Winter 2005 (Issue 182) PSSC Journal. Along with his text there are 26 pictures of the "new" Chamaedorea - including the stunning Chamaedorea frondosa, C. piscofolia, C. rossteniorum, C. sullivaniorum and many more.
