Gold Form A catechu

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if the Areca catechu var alba or gold form can handle as much sun as its green cousin? I have one doing fine in the greenhouse, but I may consider planting it out one warm summer day.

Mature specimens grow in full sun in their habitat, but my experience with them is that they will look ten times better in at least half shade. I have a three gallon plant that gets about 4 hours of sun (7am-11am) and seems to do just fine.

I agree, with our very hot and sunny days here in S. Florida, they look a little better with some dapple shade, especially  during mid day.

Would love to see pictures of this Areca catechu form, besides my seedlings:

I just planted a couple of these from 3 gallon pots:

Before moving to Hilo I was not very familiar with this palm (since it won't grow in California) but after seeing them in gardens here I knew I had to plant a couple!

11 year old thread bump. Good memories. All my gold forms that lived went to Broome. Much better home for them.
