Edison planted these royals around 100 years ago on this road. while the 89 freeze damaged and even killed a few many are still thriving in their old age.

Many of the royals Edison planted along McGregor Blvd are reaching the end of their natural lives and are dying. But the City of Ft. Myers, which named itself The City of Palms after Edison's gesture, replaces the original royals and takes care of them as they repay the cost of occasional fertilizer and labor to pick up fallen fronds many times over in tourist $$$. The City devotes the whole month of Feb. worshipping at the altar of its benefactor and primary tourist attraction (well, aside from the beaches) with parades, frequent news coverage, public tv programs, 5K runs and the like. The Almighty Edison is Ft. Myers' Washington-Jefferson-Lincoln combined. Quite curious and more than a little odd.

Were you able to see the nice P. sargentii "Fat Boy" planted on Sanibel? They seemed to have naturally escaped the viral issues of the past 10 years.
