Some of the Butia seem to have died from last winter but 90% of them have came back and look like nothing happened. Some of the palms are still showing wind damage from Florence.

Also there were some Phoenix Canariensises across the street. According to Google maps they have been here for 6 years. I know there are more Canariensis here in Atlantic Beach, they always come back after being defoliated. Very root hardy and should be grown here more often imo.

I am convinced that CIPDs are more root hardy than Butias. CIDPs will defiantly defoliate at higher temperatures but seems to come back from temperatures that would have killed a Butia. That's what I have noticed along the coast here.

Atlantic Beach used to be full of Washingtonias until last January killed them off. I hope they make a comeback, they're one of my favorite palms. The only Washingtonias I have seen alive January 2018 were down in Kure Beach.  But I am certain that there are a few survivors in Atlantic Beach that I haven't seen yet.

Butias can be weird, you will get some that die easily, some that are extremely hardy, some that defoliate but come back every year, and some that won't exfoliate but when they do they are dead. You have to kind of luck out with these endless you live in a place where they are bulletproof (like a Southern solid zone 8b or higher).

Butias here are best kept in microclimates or on the barrier islands in NC. I have seen some local Butias come back after the winter but they were growing right next to the houses facing south. For the beaches, these palms are much more abundant than Sabals in the landscaping. I've seen Butia naturalize about 20 minutes from my house, which is a beautiful sight to see.
