My Palms 1972

Pal Meir

Recommended Posts

In the early 1970s there were only a couple of palm species available here in Germany. When I checked my photos from 1972 I could find the following 10 genera with 13 species:

Butia odorata < »Cocos australis«
Chamaedorea elegans < »Collinia elegans«
Chamaerops humilis
Cocos nucifera
Howea forsteriana
Phoenix canariensis
Phoenix dactylifera
Phoenix roebelenii
Rhapis subtilis < »kañnoñchiku« 観音竹
Syagrus weddelliana < »Microcoelum weddellianum«
Trachycarpus fortunei < »Trachycarpus excelsa«
Washingtonia filifera
Washingtonia robusta

Very interesting Pal Meir. How was the general availability of seeds plants in Germany at this time? Were palms a specialty item?

In the 1960s a »normal« florist’s had only Chamaedorea elegans or Phoenix canariensis, but if you were lucky also Howea forsteriana and Syagrus weddelliana (always 3 in one Ø8cm H9cm clay pot without hole). But there was a special shop for exotic seeds in Hamburg-Blankenese (A. Schenkel) which was my first source for dozens of palm species in the 1970s and 80s.
