You can also learn about cultivating these palms as well as the habitats in which they grow.

Coccothrinax macroglossa is one of the two Coccothrinax "azuls" in Cuba that are characterized by the leaves having bluish topsides. Both grow in serpentine soils but this species is a much more vigorous grower in cultivation than the other Coccothrinax "azul," Coccothrinax spirituana. The bluish wax on the topsides of the leaves of this species washes off from rains and irrigation with the older leaves becoming green. This is the species that is more common in cultivation. Read more about about these species in the book, on sale now for a limited time.

Here is a young specimen of Coccothrinax macroglossa in habitat, a habitat shot of Coccothrinax macroglossa, a closeup of the leaf showing the bluish wax covering on the leaves that eventually wash off with rains and the coarse, open leaf base fiber.

Coccothrinax spirituana is the other Coccothrinax "azul." Compared to Coccothrinax macroglossa, it is a much slower grower and does not get as tall. The topsides of the leaves are even bluer and the color does not wash off with the rains, so the plants always look very blue and stand out in their habitat. Very few of these plants are in cultivation, but more seeds have found their way into cultivation recently. Read up more on this species and the other Cuban palms in "The Palms of Cuba" book.

Trying to order a copy from amazon for shipping to Australia.

Says not available so no joy

Steve

I just learned from another customer in Australia that Amazon will no longer ship there. Something to do with some sort of tax. This is just a very recent problem. I am attempting to send direct to the other customer and we will see how that turns out.

Steve, The book I sent to a customer in Australia arrived in just over a week, so it is possible for me to send books there. Shipping is nearly the same as the price of the book though. Contact me privately if this is something you want to look into: copernicia@outlook.com.
