  I just watched a short show on Ch 24 WUCF PBS Orlando/Daytona  etc about the Tavares area .

On the boat tour along the Dora Canal , the guide pointed out the " State tree " and correctly called it a Sabal palm , but

then continued with the statement that it is the only palm native to Florida , and that one way or another , all of the other

palms that are seen in the state , were brought here by ( I assume he meant ) Europeans .

   Maybe a local there can correct the guy .

I've heard the same on the Myakka River State Park tours here in Sarasota. The guide said that the Cabbage Palms and the Saw Palmetto you see are the only native palms to Florida. In reality those are not even the only two species native to that park. Just the two common ones. Sabal minor grows there also. In total there are 11 species of palms native to Florida.
