Photos of the Sullivan gardens in Ventura

Driving back from Santa Barbara to Orange County, we stopped in Ventura to visit Pauleen Sullivan’s old gardens.  I had never seen these in person, although I’d seen plenty of photos posted here and elsewhere.

In the front yard of her old house were the amazing specimens of Dypsis decipiens and the very tall and beautifulIMG_0021.thumb.jpg.f6896291fa9530246f904 Ceroxylon alpinum towering over the garden.  Older photos show two tall Ceroxylons, but something must have happened to other one as now there is only one.  There was also a stubby fan palm identified in previous photos as a Trithrinax species.  And could see all the amazing mature Howeas towering over the back yard.  It looked like the front yard landscape is not getting the maintenance now that it once did, comparing what I saw with older photos.

Also went to the her Tonga Apartments a few blocks away, which were lushly planted with mature Howeas and lots of other palms and tropical plants.

I'm glad Pauleen's legacy lives on in Southern California. Her famous palm garden on Hawaii was destroyed in the lava flow. :(
