Proliferation of Cycad pups

Recommended Posts

I know to expect plenty of pups on larger cycads, but some seem to produce a proliferation even as small seedlings.  I was aware that Encephalartos nubimontanus is notorious for this, but was a bit surprised by my Encephalartos inopinus which is about baseball size on the largest caudex.  First the nubi.  Not so noticeable initially, but at ground level you can see the other perspective.  The main caudex only flushed 3 leaves last time, and is still so small its only pushing out 5 this time.  Despite that it appears there are 4 pups coming off it.

Next is the Encephalartos inopinus.  It started its first pup when the main caudex was only about 1.5" in diameter, and now has 4 pups of varying sizes.  The whole plant and a couple of close up photos from two sides of the pups.  The pups on these are growing out at an angle from the sides.  Which Encephalartos are you growing which are already prolific puppers at a relatively small size?

An updated photo of this Encephalartos inopinus now that most of those new leaves it was pushing have hardened off.   I did cheat a little and trimmed off a couple of leaves to make room for all the new ones coming from the pups.
