Sabal Mexicana transplant, does it need a hurricane cut?

[forking this from my original thread as it’s a more specific topic]

pics of the tree are in the other thread.

Hey all,

So the sabal mexicana was moved about 1.5 weeks ago, and has been getting daily waterings. The newest fronds are showing shock, yellowing or browning.

Question:

Is it necessary to prune off the bulk of the fronds to help the sabal recover?

=========

In the other thread, palmatiermeg weighed in with a hurricane cut recommendation (thanks!).

i wanted to see if this was the general consensus, because while I have found some info suggesting this after a transplant, I haven’t seen a lot of info about it and could use some more confidence before doing the prune.

So so what are others thoughts here, no prune, some prune, or hurricane cut?

Yes, remove the leaves. You’re losing water through the leaves that the roots cannot replenish.

Sabals have to replace their entire root system when they’re cut because the roots die. It’s kind of like a giant cutting that needs to root before growth starts.

Yes you should have removed all but 3 fronds and the spear.

Before I trim off the 2 remaining full size fronds, when you say leave 3 - in this case would that mean leave just the 3 partially grown fronds?
