Xmas palm outside

17 posts in this topic

Hey guys just got a beauty 3 gallon Xmas palm. Plan was to leave it in pot and put in the ground beside my pool for summer only it’s pretty open and will be west to east. Will the Rural winds here be too much to have it in the open?

Tentative spot it was a tad too heavy and hard to keep it up right with such a small base

Am I to assume your nights are now above 50F and days above 70F? Can I assume that when you get rain it will be a warm summer rain and not the cold, raw rain that part of the country often gets in early-mid spring? If not, you may have problems. My Adonidias have taken cat 3 winds from Irma - they come from a part of the world that experiences cyclones so have adapted to wind, i.e., warm wind. Prolonged cold wind might be another matter. Rain at temps in the 40s & 50s may be lethal to this very tropical palm. It should love the high heat, humidity and warm rain of an East Coast summer.

One more thought:  that pot looks awfully small. When happy this palm can grow quite fast. Beware that it doesn't sink roots deep into your soil from that 3g pot that could present problems when you want to dig it up in the fall. Otherwise, enjoy its tropical ambience. Nice little palm.

This tree comes from a palm tree importer and nursery we looked at the pot today and the roots are kinda but not ready for transplant. When it’s time changing it is no problem. The rains are fine. There’s coconuts outside here already doing just fine and yes the temps are stable enough

The place I get the larger ones from just opened today. They do not let the palms go until weather is stable and on the warm up I only asked about wind thanks

I may check the roots in a month but for now I just wanted it in the ground and supported and landscaping around it to follow.

Today’s digging is tentative I wanted to pot up the palm. My palm guy suggested leaving it. I know I’m torn. In my experience every palm in a pot I have purchased has been ready to report   Maybe this weekend when I have a chance I will repost anyway and it will help give stability to the palm and let it stretch it’s wings.

So cute. Reminds me of a winter photo of my younger grandson that age going eye to eye with a snowman as tall as he was. Looks like you have at least 2 palms in that pot.

It was about 40 bux Canadian for 3 gallon size. If I do buy any palms i always buy 3 gallon because I want to enjoy the growth and see the change over time.
