Concern for Leilani Estates as lava moves eastward underground

Looking decent in Honolulu as most of the rain has passed. Overcast but not stopping surfers from being out there. Been watching maybe 3 guys out there on the Live Stream from Honolulu Civil Beat cam. Some nice rides. Scrub back to see some better waves earlier on. For some reason last night and into today, maybe due to darkness, they had the camera trained on a street seen, but then a bit ago they switched to the ocean scene. Much more fun to look in on. Have seen a few joggers along the beachfront and apparently segways are popular out there as I saw group of people on them riding by on the path.

I guess we will soon be finding out about the damage done on the Big Island from Lane.

Saw this video and really feel for the homeowners struggling to keep the Waiakea "stream" from entering their home. Location was listed as Waiakea Uka, Hilo. Video would have been from yesterday. I'm guessing there was some sort of retaining wall or channel embankment at the edge of their lot but couldn't have been too far from the edge of their lot. You see them trying to rearrange the sandbags as time goes on and as the overflow changes. By the end of the video the water had pushed pretty close to the edge of the house.

Knowing the height of Mauna Loa and the power of downslope water from there, I'm surprised that developments were able to be built so close to the stream. I do imagine that this hurricane induced rainfall situation doesn't happen that often in such a short period of time but I know Hilo does get some of the highest rainfall totals in the area all the same. So would flood insurance cover this and would people typically have flood insurance?

Glad Leilani Estates, who has has more than it's share of nature, is getting a break from all the rain. Kona seems to be doing pretty well. Hilo, not so much. Here's a water comparison that speaks to the amount collected from the mountainside.

Remember this bridge from yesterday? Well here's footage of it from about an hour or so ago posted by Demian Barrios (Db Photo at Primary Focus). Notice the debris on the bridge from when the water flowed over the top of it. Yikes..... Here's the very latest update from Dane DuPont on Leilani Estate conditions and F8 lava flow.

BTW I've noticed over a few nights looking at F8 lavacam a orange-ish glow but I've thought it might be from an LED light reflecting from the camera equipment perhaps onto the plexiglass that was installed prior to the hurricane to protect the camera equipment from the elements. Just my take on the comment from Dane about a faint orange glow. Here's two screen grabs I took that illustrate it.

Hawaii Tribune-Herald story on the rescue of some residents along the Piihonua bridge area. Apparently from the article Mayor Kim said debris has been deposited on the bridge surface before but not since the 1980s. http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/2018/08/25/hawaii-news/lanes-rains-swell-streams-rivers-into-monstrous-torrents-cause-damage-evacuations/

More on that area with video (a compilation of flooding footage) : http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/2018/08/25/hawaii-news/rainfall-from-storm-inundates-east-hawaii/

Have to say watching some of the flowing water "rapids" reminded me of the lava channel, like in Leilani in the not to distant past.

Coverage from Honolulu Star-Advertiser on rescues in other parts of Hilo area including Hawaiian Acres and Keaau Ag Lots, mostly from vehicles but also from a home. They report that the National Weather Service recorded 42.81 inches of rain in the Waiakea Uka area (where footage posted above of that house by the stream was from). http://www.staradvertiser.com/2018/08/25/breaking-news/fire-officials-busy-with-east-hawaii-rescues/

Just heard on the tube that this was the most rain in a three day period for Hilo since record keeping began in 1949. And record rain in Hilo is saying something.

It'll be interesting to see the Monday USGS report.  Given the vast amount of rain, Hilo seems to have come through the weather fairly well.  I worry about the large number of displaced people in the vicinity, often living in somewhat improvised situations.

The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden had hoped to reopen by now, but is remaining closed until further notice (Facebook).  It's described as "some cleaning up to do" so presumably not too bad.

Washington Post has a story on agricultural damage, largely on the east side of the Big Island.  But the lack of wind saved coffee and macadamia trees.

So has anyone seen anything regarding how all the people already displaced by the eruption fared through all that rain? I assume there are still a fair number of those people in temporary housing? Echoing @Dave-Vero concern about their well being. Already had been through enough. :(

Dane DuPont was reporting 3 hours ago that the flash flooding warning was extended until 5:30pm across all of Kauai. Kind of been out of touch staying off the computer and had no idea the effects were still being felt along the chain. Videos posted to fb Hawaii Tracker group look pretty bad for a lot of the area being under water. https://www.facebook.com/groups/hawaiitracker/

Interesting footage of F8 as well.

----

Speaking of naming F8 by the native hawaiians, saw this article on Councilwoman Ruggles that was interesting: http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/2018/08/29/hawaii-news/ruggles-situation-confounds-officials/  I would think this could postpone in some way plans to move forward with disaster relief in housing etc. for lava evacuees that lost homes.

BTW I haven't seen an update on the people in shelters or micro units in some time. The only thing I saw the other day was a article in Big Island News saying the Pahoa shelter would be officially closing as of September 17. I believe Pahoa had fewer remaining shelter residents than Keaau's shelter. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser had more details in their article today.

Just a reminder to anyone wanting to catch Thursday, 8/30's public lecture by USGS Menlo Park, Calif. online Live. Topic "What on Earth is Going on at Kilauea Volcano?" Kyle Anderson, USGS Research Geophysicist, will be presenting. I recall seeing Kyle over in Hawaii during some of the USGS interviews or CD talks.  Airs at 7pm. PDT LIVE so plan accordingly. Should be available later to view on demand under the "Video Archives" on the same webpage below.

We caught the lecture live online tonight and enjoyed Kyle's presentation. Very well done, clearly presented and with a sense of humor which helped it flow along nicely. Did not know he had been studying Kilauea for USGS/HVO as long as he had been and had actually been in Hawaii since early May. We use to attend the USGS public lectures in person at their California headquarters after work many years ago before moving further away from Menlo Park, and it was nice to see Leslie still doing the presentations. She has been leading these at least since the 90s when we started attending. I will say that if you have been following along here on the forum and catching most of the news articles/videos/HUB talks you probably found this lecture to be a review.

Which brings me to express this. Thank you Palm Talk for so generously allowing this thread to exist and to the breath that it does. While the eruption may or may not be over for Leilani Estates and LERZ, still to be determined over time, I know I have learned a tremendous amount and experienced this terrible natural disaster and amazing nature event in a way and depth that I probably never would have otherwise. So much nicer to do it among all of you especially. And very much appreciate the input from Leilani residents and those living on the island, as well as those that have visited or contributed in other ways. Hope this doesn't sound like a goodbye of sorts just thought at this juncture a good time to express my thoughts and thanks to all.

----

That said, I saw this USGS photo taken 8/21 and posted 8/22 which was not shown during the presentation that was pretty impressive, as well as a video USGS facebook online posted of Halema'uma'u from a UAS survey on 8/26. Like wow on both. Photo is during a hike USGS did along Chain of Craters Road (or what was left of it) with Mauna Loa in the background right of screen.
