Transplanting small volunteer Butias

I am wanting to dig up some small Butias that are just going into the pinnate stage, to give to a friend. I have success with seedlings and of course mature palms, but these tweeners have given me problems in the past. Can they lose some of their root system and not be subject to too much shock? Should I remove all the fronds except the spear leaf when this is done?. They have to be removed from where they are, so this is going to happen, any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Maybe you should just move the entire plant with as much root material as physically possible.

Like Palmsbro said, try to get as much root as physically possible. Whenever I dig small palms up I never trim the fronds.

Thanks for your suggestion on getting as much root as possible. I always try to do that, but I was going to send these to someone via mail or u.p.s. and the added weight may get expensive. I guess I'll just give it a whirl , no harm done as they have to come out anyway.
