Odd Cocoid Hybrid

Recommended Posts

So I have this cocoid hybrid that's supposed to be a Buju or Jubu. It's been in the ground for 5 years or so, shady area, slow growth. But this bad boy is different. There are two odd characteristics that suggest Syagrus blood. Check it out. From a distance, it just looks like a robust Butia. On closer inspection all the fronds show plumosity and the fine point armament of a some mules. The pinnae are actually a little wider like Jub. It's fascinating. It lost its spear with the 8F low this winter, but fairly unharmed otherwise. What do y'all think? My best guess is Buju X Syagrus.

How hardy do you reckon it is? Looks pretty cool none the less!

I've never seen plumosity in Butia.

I like that look.  Very nice palm in front of massive crepe myrtles...

I’ve seen a plumose Butia before. I think it’s just a part of their variability.

So, that's pretty cool then, a plumose Butia.

Pure Butia in my opinion.

UK zone 8b/9a. No heavy frosts. Occasional -6c. Dull wet winters. Cool summers.

Interesting, I just received a 5 gallon Butia yatay X mule from Patric. It's showing many of the same characteristics. Green. Similar plumosity. Except no armament yet. I'm alright if it's just a Butia, but it just acts different.

Talked to Patric about it. He agrees that its just an unusual form of Butia.

Have you planted this out? I have two of these from Patric and so far really like them.

Yep. It's in the woods, so growth will be slower. It's doing well though. Planted it out this spring.

As for the original plant discussed, I keep thinking it's not simply a Butia.
