This is a great palm.  In case anyone missed this thread about germinating Braheas, check it out.  I just germinated one of these in only 10 days...

Best of luck to everyone.

It's their 6th month now, guess they'll take a bit more to sprout since I've been keeping them too cold. Can I put them outside, the daytime temps range from 80-85F but they are in a plastic box so it'll get hotter in there, however the nightime lows range from 55-70 F that might be a problem.

I'd leave them inside, where it's warmer. If you can find a warm spot in your house that stays warm, e.g., near, but not on, a stove, or computer parts that generate heat (be careful to keep watertight) that will help.

If you're going to be doing a lot of this, get a heating mat for seed germination. I've got three, but i'm totally nutty . . . .

Congratulations!  I'm happy that this technique is working for other people as well.  :)  This past week I have seen #2 of the 4 seeds I tried germinate.  The first batch of seeds I tried took 4 months to germinate.  @canelgat are you now experiencing hot weather temperatures also?  Here in south central Texas we are seeing 33º C during the afternoon every day now.

Well, I use an incubator that actually consists of a modified refrigerator where I have put a heated cable with a thermostat, the temperature ranges between 30ºC and 33ºC.

Outside now in spring we have temperatures of 15ºC at night and about 25ºC at noon.

Hello friends,

I was impatient and tried again the technique I mentioned before in this topic:

http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/56382-germinating-old-brahea-seeds-in-less-than-2-weeks/

I modified it a bit, using a oven sterilized Petri dish and sterile cloth, 30°C. This is the result after exactly one week.

Lets wish these four Franken babies luck to survive the first days in new pots!

No problems with 100% humidity. Usually Brahea spot up and melt away here in the South.

DoomsDave,

Here are some of the offspring of the Franken brahea.   These were started July 2017.   These live on in Texas.

@DoomsDave you asked me about the seeds!

Here are the 2018 Franken babies:

They seem to have a gray tint even at this age, here you can see it compared with other Brahea which I believe to be B. aculeata. Are the B. armata traits responsible for this color?

Even years can pass. Brahea seeds are slow compared to most other species.

Yikes!! I guess the 2 months i've waited so far is nothing then.

You can try this technique, it really speeds things up and other palmtalkers had good results with it too!

One of last year's sprouts (rest  ungerminated seeds of last year have germinated now) has very wide strap leaves, it is the only one of this kind among seven seedlings. What's in there DD?

I'm pretty sure it's a cross between B. armata and B. brandeegii. Don Hodel examined it and agrees with me, though it's not a slam-dunk guarantee.

I hear that Clara is also a similar cross, but I've got a B. Clara and it's different; much skinnier, with a far airier crown than the Monster.

The Monster does seem to have tolerance to water that other Braheas don't; Clara has similar tolerances, too.

Correct me if I am wrong but brandegeei's seeds are smaller than those of armata, which in turn are smaller than the seeds of your Frankie. Would it not be more probable that seeds from such cross have an intermediate size?

I think that b and a seeds are about the same size, having had both. Both also have black fruit on the outside.

Monster seeds are different; they're a bit smaller, and their fruits are brownish.

These i sown 26 april are giving their first sign of life. They are in a unheating greenhouse that was 30-35c all summer and now 25c and at night 15-20c, So exciting!
