ROME (AP) — The Arctic storm dubbed the “Beast from the East” set record temperatures across much of Europe on Monday and brought a rare snowstorm to Rome, paralyzing the city and giving its residents an unusual chance to ski, sled and build snowmen in its famous parks and piazzas.

Yike!

Keep in mind that Rome is about the same latitude as Boston, MA, USA. And Minneapolis, more or less.

Latitude discussions are a downer for me. It always reminds me that I am south of San Diego and Casablanca, Morocco but nowhere near their mild winters....

Yeah until recent years I never realized how underachieving the US is for our latitudes east of the Rockies. I was shocked when I learned palms grow in parts of Switzerland (~46 degrees N), but somehow not in my hometown of Lawrence, KS (~38 degrees north). It's kind of laughable that this was always attributed to the Gulf Stream, when that's only part of the equation. North America is a perfect storm of blocking all moderating Pacific influence while ushering in all Arctic blasts.

So it’s time to start shoveling dirt from Canada and moving it to north Europe :)

Same for me. Though ever since grade school, I've always had this strange feeling about how...."generic" US flora and fauna were compared to that seen in other parts of the world. The weather conditions may explain everything.

Oh, but the Pacific influence is still there, just enough to really enhance the effect of these Arctic blasts. You know, through teleconnections, low-pressures and such.
