Size of Fans

I bought a couple of robustas last year that had about an 8’ trunk. The guy I bought them from said that he got them from a guy further north from where I am (about 100 miles). They didn’t have any fronds in them when I bought them, and they had a very small root ball.

I babies them last year, but the size and length of the fans were small and short; noticeably more so on one than the other.

This year, we had a freak snow and ice storm. The first in about 20 years for my area (southeast Georgia, zone 8b, but in the very edge of 9a/coastal South Georgia).

So, my question (hypothesis): Will repeated defoliation affect the size of the new fans and length of the petiole?
