Elon Musk's incredible rocket

Elon Musk tested his impressive solar system capable rocket today and it was most impressive. The vehicle is made of three rockets tied together with the boosters coming back and landing tail first, two on land and one on a floating platform at sea. In a stunt that would make Barnum and Bailey envious, he put a Tesla car in orbit with this launch.

The vehicle has 27 rocket engines and is the most powerful spacecraft ever developed.

This is a big step in his plans to go to Mars

I'd herd about the launch, but forgot the date.. It was supposedly visible overhead sometime this evening. Was hoping to catch a glimpse. Saw the last SpaceX launch from Vandenburg AFB back in December. Pretty sure this one was a bit more impressive from what pictures i've seen on the news earlier tonight.

The Falcon Heavy is certainly the biggest in current use, but I believe that the Saturn 5 had a higher thrust rating. Musk has achieved a tremendous feat, and I wouldn't ever bet against his ambition.  (Still don't get the preoccupation with Mars, however !)   I read one article that claims Musk has plans for an even larger rocket, working name, the BFR, for Big F******* Rocket. :greenthumb:

I think the really cool part is when the engines come back and land on the pad.

Lived in Cape Coral, Miami, Orlando and St. Petersburg Florida.

What is anyone going to do with a car in space?

Great publicity stunt, I guess.

I hear the cars are pretty neat. One of my near-neighbors has one, and they're getting more and more common out here in La Tierra de La La.

I have seen the Saturn 5 at Kennedy space center. It is absolutely gigantic.

I haven't looked up the specs for the heavy whatever , but I'm pretty sure I read the saturn 5 is bigger.

This event sure lined up perfectly with the Tesla earnings report and helped deflect all of the attention away from the $675M quarterly loss that Tesla just posted (worst in company history).

The man is a genius on many fronts and propaganda/marketing may be his greatest talent of all. He never ceases to impress.

The rocket just launched by Musk is called the Heavy Falcon and has a payload capacity of about 150,000 pounds compared to about 250,000 pounds for the Saturn V. His Mars rocket scheduled to begin testing in 2019 is called the B.F. R. (Big "Frickin" Rocket) and will have a payload of about 300,000 pounds. Musk intends on sending two cargo ships to Mars in 2022 and then sending a crew to Mars in 2024 and building a Mars colony. The BFR will be capable of sending a crew of up to 100 people.

In this latest stunt he sent his Tesla car on a trek that will go past Mars to the asteroid belt and is "driven" by his robot Starman.

I enjoy keeping an eye on Mars and in 2003 took an image of Mars from my backyard showing a dust storm that had just begun in Chryse Planitia, the Plains of Gold.

About a month later I was looking at the other side of Mars which showed Olympus Mons (the circular area toward the bottom), the largest volcano in the solar system.

I call BS on the whole idea.  The average surface temperature of Mars is -67 F.  The infrastructure costs are (mild pun) astronomical!  What possible economic activity on Mars could make this infrastructure  cost effective?  How will multiple generations adapt to reduced gravity?  And to what end ?  So that mankind can foul another system ?  Perhaps a little less hubris, and more attention to healing Mother Earth.  If humans can't continue on Earth due to anthropogenic damage, then we don't deserve a second chance.  :)

Boy,I must have had too much coffee this morning!  Don't talk to me about "outer space".  We can't even get out of our own solar system. (one probe so far).  Travel  500,000 light years, then we can talk about 'space'.  :mrlooney:

Darold, speaking of the economics of everything, Elon Musk’s businesses are highly subsidized by the government, so they don’t need to be economical. They can light money on fire.

Now I think Space X are pretty cool, but they would be a lot cooler if they would be   viable in the free market.

Corpus Christi, TX, near salt water, zone 9b/10a! Except when it isn't and everything gets nuked.
