Jan 03 2018 Deep South Snowstorm

I moved to Leland, NC, the most immediate suburb to Wilmington, this past October from Philadelphia.  I seem to have brought the cold with me.  We have had record-breaking cold with three nights in a row in the teens, with another three nights in a row hitting mid-teens forecast starting tomorrow night.  Today, we are under siege from a snowstorm that will undoubtedly go down in the record books.  I know anywhere in the South has the potential to snow, but I didn't think I'd get this much snow this quickly during my very first year here!

I have grown to despise snow from decades of shoveling and driving in it up north, but down here it is a special event.  Plus, I get to see something I've never seen before: snow-covered palms!  So, I figure I'd make the best out of this special event and share with you all some images of the palms in my new yard decked out in...their winter clothing...?

Enjoy.

The storm began at about 5PM and started as freezing rain.  My palms quickly turned into palmcicles.  Pulling on the fronds delivered a satisfying "crunch!"

After about two hours, the freezing rain began changing over into snow.

My poor garden is buried.  Three nights in the teens has my broccoli looking like it's not going to make it.  This isn't helping.

Using the highly precise patio-table-method of measuring snowfall, I'd say we have about four inches.

This will be one for the record books.  I've had enough of the cold, so we'll see what awaits us in the morning.

Snow scenes are always so beautiful. Good thing Butias & Sabals are so tough. Thanks for the memories.

They are always more beautiful when viewed through time and distance, not when you had to live and work in them.
