This sp never ceases to surprise me with its variability. This time an obviously arborescent cultivar shows almost unarmed petioles.

That is a really nice specimen. I've seen several others over the years that were nearly spineless as well.

As you said though, this species displays a lot of variability. There's one in Oklahoma City at the Myriad botanical garden in a jungle greenhouse that is unarmed. It is kind of stretched out under the canopy of larger trees, so it looks pretty unique.
