Palm Locations in Albuquerque

pennerchris@gmail.com

Recommended Posts

I've been in Albuquerque a lot lately, and have spent some time looking for palms, with no success. I've used some threads on other forums as my guide--users compiled a list of locations around the city. The list was from 2006, so I suspect some of the palms have died and been removed.

Do any of you local guys know where I could spot some palms that are *currently* living?

PS: I was able to find the legendary saguaro in the South valley... Unfortunately it's pretty dead. See pic.

Hey Chris,

I know about the forums you were talking about, and yes many of the palms that were mentioned then are dead. Here are some locations where I'm pretty sure some palms are still alive. I wish more people planted palms here!

At the Pappadeaux Restaurant on I-25 and Jefferson, there are a few windmill palms that are growing in front of their restaurant.

At the Flying Star on Paseo Del Norte and Wyoming, the outside courtyard has a few smaller windmill palms growing.

The children's area of the Botanical Garden has a few windmills as well.

On Layton Ave, there's a house that has a tall windmill. The link of it is below:

https://www.google.com/maps/@35.1473709,-106.53575,3a,18.9y,38.56h,89.9t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sx-Pkp7IA5L63YBuK8hWeVA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

In Corrales, there's a neighborhood in which a few of the houses have large California Fan palms! The palms always seem to die back and burn badly every winter but in the summertime, always come back.

https://www.google.com/maps/@35.2062482,-106.642296,3a,75y,338.07h,86.47t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1skVXnFHXewVJ_TqbVBCsICA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

I'm almost certain that the palms at all these locations are still alive.

Otherwise, here are a few spots of palms that I haven't seen yet in person, but on street view look alive and healthy. Here are the links to the street views:

There used to be this Mexican restaurant on Central about 10-11 years ago that had Queen palms and Mexican fan palms planted in their parking lot! Can you believe that?? It's really a shame that they died... The Queens unfortunately had no chance of growing here whatsoever.

Here's a link to google maps from October 2007, and actual pictures that someone took of them!

At the ABQ Zoo (part of the Biopark, but separate from the Botanic Garden), there are some windmills of various sizes, plus other interesting plantings. I also remember a number of very happy, reproducing Sabal minor in one or two areas at the zoo. The Biopark is one of the colder parts of ABQ on winter nights, since cold air settles down off of the majority of town, which is higher east or west. That limits palms and other marginally hardy plants there, which often make it better elsewhere in town (though some only barely).

More info here: https://www.cabq.gov/culturalservices/biopark

There are some windmills in a courtyard at UNM, possibly near the English building. Plus there are others in Ridgecrest and a few other places around town.

Good luck your next trip!

Thanks for the good locations. I never knew about the Children's Garden or the Far NE Flying Star windmill palms.

Here's another palm just east of the annual / temporary queen palm planting Steve posted W of San Mateo on Central:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/210+La+Veta+Dr,+Albuquerque,+NM+87108/@35.0791193,-106.5835705,3a,60y,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sOP9rizYGpBnvX_jUyGoaAA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!4m5!3m4!1s0x87220b1d6a434edf:0x8755214a7527bc71!8m2!3d35.0791946!4d-106.5832177

That Washingtonia filifera is in front of a landscape architect's office, 210 La Veta Dr NE. It was either planted small or from seed years ago. It came right back after Feb 2011's -5 to -10F record low.

I have better photos of that Washingtonia filifera, which I'll need to find.

Hi David,

Yes, there are a number of windmills and sabals at the zoo. Thanks for including that, I totally forgot about those palms. As for the palms at UNM, I thought I recall seeing some windmills near the Zimmerman Library?

I tried to find them a couple weeks ago and was not successful. They're supposed to be around Zimmerman Library according to a decade old post I found on another site; same place I found reports of a row of windmills somewhere on the CNM campus. Again--no luck finding these.

Hey Chris,

I found this flickr page from someone who found them, but I along with you don't know where they are unfortunately... :( I will try to go to UNM sometime to go look for them.

They are out there though...

Okay, so I've located them on Google Street View!!

They're by the economic building in the little courtyard. Here's the street view to the palms, its a little hard to see them but you can definitely see the fronds.

Those look like the UNM palms I remember...I thought the courtyard of the English building, or possibly Journalism? But you may be right on Econ.

I don't recall windmills at any of the CNMs. I remember specifying large ones into the courtyard at the first building at CNM West (2001?), but they became Yucca rostrata...yawn! I provided land architect services at 3 of the CNM campuses with my own design practice, then another as a grunt employee of someone who caused me to take the self-employment plunge! Definitely no palms at those, at least 10-15 years ago.

But the main campus on Lead, maybe palms?

All the palms are larger and look better today than these past google pics.  By the way, I am typing this in Lubbock! Wishing you well!

PS  I don't really document trachies so much, they are around. All the palms I noted survived 2011(-7f to -11f).  As the futher east of interstate 25, or closer to the Sandias, the east winds during the arctic spells become a factor in palms survival. So the actual "palm" zone actually lies on the westside of ABQ as our arctic cold comes from the east thru the canyons.

Thanks for those; now I know where one planting is that I wanted to see for ages (3904 Rayado Pl NW). True on Trachys being used all over (and for a long time). Some of those Google image palms look rough, but we're lucky in Las Cruces with much warmer winter days and a little warmer winter nights / longer summers.

Agreed that the ABQ heights and especially foothills and canyon are not where I would do palms, even with often warmer lows than other parts of town.

I'm with you DAC, I've been seeing those palms in photos for a while now and could NEVER find them.  I'm going to go check them out once I get over this terrible cold....
