Hi,

I'm planning to go for few days to the canary island (las palmas or tenerife) maybe both, and I would like to collect some fresh tropical palm seeds (Dypsis, Caryota, Hyophorbe, Veitchia, Bismarkia, Latantia, Pritchardia, Chamberonia sp ....) what's the best place to go ? Any advice ?

I would like aslo to get some beccariophoenix alfredii seeds but im not sure if there are some mature beccariophoenix palms there or some seed sellers ??

Thanks.

I don't know the answer myself but the Northern Hemisphere is heading into winter. Here in FL most palms, except for Adonidias and some Veitchias, have completed their seeding cycles and won't flower again until next spring. So the dead of winter is not a good time to seek fresh ripe seeds. I have discovered the same situation during several December cruises to Caribbean islands: no fresh palms seeds available. I don't know about the Canary Islands as I've never been there but I suspect seed prospect during winter will be equally grim. You may want to postpone seed prospecting until next summer unless someone there can provide reliable data.

Dear Mehdi,

For seeds you can try this web site :

http://rarepalmseeds.com/small.shtml

Canary islands is more a tourist spot to spend a vacation. And canary date palm fans would love to see them in natural habitat.

And there is this Palmetum :

Palmetum, Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Nuevo "Palmetum de Maspalomas"

Love,

Kris.

Dear Mehdi,

Good news is that one of our forum members by name Carlo Morici He is a nice gentleman living in canary islands, who is also in-charge in the developmental works going on inside this Palmetum.I strongly recommend that you PM him and talk to him about your visit to canary islands and your interest in visiting Palmetum and also your desire to collect palm seeds. He can guide you through.

General rule is that visitors are not allowed to collect seeds or saplings in any botanical gardens around the world.Until and unless the botanical garden themselves are running a nursery where visitors can make purchases of their products at a reasonable sum.

Wish you a happy journey and there is lot to photograph in canary islands...Have a memorable trip.

Love,

Kris.

BTW. Sorry about the fonts in the above post.I don't know what happened.
