What type of Palm is this?

While visiting some friends in Memphis, TN I noticed a neighbor down the street who had palms in their backyard around the pool.  I snapped a few pictures as I was so impressed with the size of them.  I don't believe they protect them during the winter months.  Can you tell me what type of palms they are?  Next time I visit, I plan to knock on their door and ask about them.

Thanks!

Yes, the large palms are windmill palms (Trachycarpus fortunei) and it looks like they also have a small European fan palm (Chamaerops humilis) seedling behind the pool ladder (or it might be another windmill).  The windmills would do fine in Memphis without winter protection, but I'd guess that you would need some if you were to attempt to grow outside in your climate.

How old do you think these Windmills are?

I've not grown one of these, but I would guess around 8-10 years old from a 15-gallon size.  I read on this forum where they can grow 8-11" per year once they start trunking with adequate water & fertilizer, but I have no idea how long it would take for it to grow from seed to trunking size.

I have one from a 3-gallon size currently potted.  Was planning on bringing it into the garage for the winter and then planting it in the ground in the spring.  From your reply, that might take many years for it to grow to 8 ft or so.

In your climate, definitely.
