Fast-growing, slender, overstory

NC

Recommended Posts

Aloha,

I'm seeking ideas for very-fast-growing, slender, singular-stemmed, full sun overstory type palms, for collectibility as well as practical utility, for Hawaii.

Does not need to reach nose-bleed heights, ~20' in a few years would be fine.

All suggestions are appreciated, as well as any note on a taxon's potential "invasiveness".

My first post on Palm Talk. Thanks for acceptance. Mahalo!

Not sure about Hawaii invasiveness, how about Carpentaria acuminata?

Thank you, hbernstein.

How do you think this would compare in the above attributes with Veitchia joannis?

Welcome to the forum!

A bit more specificity would be helpful in suggesting what palms might be right for your needs.

Windward, leeward, elevation, and what island are you on? All of these are significant factors in helping to answer

your question.

The Veitchia gives an impression of greater massivity. The Carpentaria grows ramrod straight and has a slightly more delicate appearance.

They both have red fruit. Carpentaria's are very red and pretty!

The consensus on PalmTalk seems to be that Pigafetta are the fastest palms for instant tall height in a few years if you are in a tropical and rainy part of Hawaii, but I don't think their trunks will be as slender as what you are seeking.

I really like the look of Rhopaloblaste, Euterpe precatoria, and many of the taller growing rain forest Hydriastele spp. (H. costata, H. cylindrocarpa etc).

Normanbya normanbyi is like a more slender and refined foxtail palm. Syagrus sancona has a similar look.

Some other Veitchia-esque palms are Actinorhytis calapparia and Bentinckia nicobarica.

If you're open to fan palms, Saribus (Livistona) rotundifolia is pretty aesthetic too.
