What determines leaf sizes in fan palms i got a fortunei which ones had big fan leaves then they went small and now growing big again? is it the water or a certain nutrient or soil etc what determines it?

Light has a lot to do with it. My Trachy is under a pine tree...excellent winter cover...lets in a fair amount of light but no real hours of full sun so the leaves are pretty big. I've read the more sun, the smaller the leaf comparatively. How is yours situated? I've also noticed, a winter of cold stress shrunk the leaves on my Mediterranean Fan Palm...no leaves died but the first ones out in the spring were quite a bit smaller...

That abrupt change in leaf size could also be produced by stress like changing the palm from position or passing it from pot to the ground.

The trachy I'm talking about gets full sun and the fan leaflets change size, I just had 2 trachy delivered but keeping both in full shade and see if the leaflets get longer, I don't want the petioles to grow long though.

First pic is a new leaf...probably 4' wide at bottom, tip to tip... Second pic, petiole in center of pic is 3 feet long. I think the petiole alone has grown 8-10" in the past year. This is a partially shaded location with no hours of direct sun...so I think this situation will grow a Trachy big and wide...granted, I could remove lower leaves to expose the trunk and reduce lower circumphrence but I read it's not good to remove healthy growth...lower leaves have been on since day one...to be honest, I'm rather surprised at how big it's gotten in the 5 or so years it's been in this spot. Going to have to remove the lower tier of pine limbs to make room for it!image.thumb.jpg.21d2f55e71205abea751ddb8 in one year...image.thumb.jpg.33ed331cbe3f25eb0e47f17f

Well?...I'd say early sun afternoon shade may keep it from wanting to stretch out and reach for the sun too much. All shade will probably not yield the results you want. My mostly shady spot was chosen for winter protection...I'll adjust the pine tree to accommodate the palm...:)

  • 4 weeks later...

Yeah....I think morning sun so it gets the direct sun it needs

but when the sun and temps get more intense later in the day,

it is shaded,I used to do the same thing with my Castor plants.
