Buy Butia seeds to send to Australia

Hi everybody!

I'm new to this forum and to growing palms; though i have been growing fruit trees in Melbourne, Australia.

I'm very interested in sourcing some Butia seeds, I'm wanting to grow a tree that produces tasty fruit and also use the flesh in the seed as a coconut substitute (can't grow coconuts where I am) - so I don't mind about seed size.

So far Butia eriospatha seems to fit the bill, though apparently a certain variety of B. odorata is also really good. Also came across some hybrids, are any of those good to grow for fruit too?

I read that apparently there's a grower in California called Patrick Schafer who is selectively breeding Butia eriospathas and other palms for fruit and other traits. Is it possible to buy seeds from him?

Any help would be appreciated!

Cheers,

M. C.

Years ago I sent Patric Schaffer some seeds of my Butia eriospatha and B.microspadix.There are palms of B. eriospatha with big juicy fruits and less fibers and others with small fruits and more fibrous.

Carambeí, 2nd tableland of the State Paraná , south Brazil.

Alt:1030m. Native palms: Queen, B. eriospatha, B. microspadix, Allagoptera leucocalyx , A.campestris, Geonoma schottiana, Trithrinax acanthocoma. Subtr. climate, some frosty nights. No dry season. August: driest month. Rain:1700mm

I am seeking for cold hardy palms!

Hi Alberto,

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I read that there is quite some variation in the fruits, which is why I wanted to get some "improved" seed. Do you have any contact details for Patric or someone else who is breeding improved B. eriospathas for fruit? Do you breed them?

Thanks

Butia eriospatha are native to my region. I have some of wild origin and also some bought from a nursery years ago and that have better quality fruits
