what to do when roots start coming out of pot

as many planter pots have holes, mine does.  My trachycarpus tesan that i planted in the sand while in the pot now has roots growing into the sand.  what do i do? get a bigger pot? cut the small roots?  thanks guys

Time to get a larger pot or put it in the ground. I'd refrain from trimming the roots if possible. 

It's the palms way of telling you it's healthy and needs more room to grow.

I concur with Tim and Jim.

But some palms will withstand root trimming to confine to a small pot, especially ones with smaller root systems to start with like Howea and Rhopies. But don't forget the water.

Also, since Trachies don't get huge (compared with some) you might be able to get away with some trimming for a while. The biggest problem over time is that as the trunk grows it gets really heavy and really really tipsy with nothing to anchor and hold it upright.

i think i should get a bigger pot.  it is definatly getting too large for the planter it came with
